Lyclear Dermal Cream Permethrin Cream 5% for Scabies and Head Lice Treatment

You can use this dermal cream to treat scabies and head lice infestations effectively. The cream contains 5% permethrin, which belongs to a group of medicines called pyrethroids that work by paralysing and killing parasites.

This topical treatment is applied directly to your skin and works by targeting the nervous system of scabies mites and lice. The 30g tube provides sufficient quantity for a full body treatment in most adults, though you may need additional tubes depending on your body size and the extent of the infestation.

How Permethrin Works Against Parasites

The active ingredient works by interfering with the sodium channels in the nerve cell membranes of parasites. This action causes prolonged depolarisation of the nerve cells, leading to paralysis and death of scabies mites and lice.

Unlike some other treatments, permethrin has a residual effect that continues to work for several days after application. This helps eliminate any remaining parasites that may hatch from eggs after your initial treatment, reducing the likelihood of re-infestation.

Who Can Use This Scabies Treatment

This permethrin cream 5% is suitable for adults and children over 2 months of age when used under medical supervision. You should consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have sensitive skin conditions.

The cream is particularly effective for treating:

  • Scabies infestations caused by Sarcoptes scabiei mites
  • Head lice when other treatments have not been successful
  • Cases where resistance to other treatments is suspected
  • Institutional outbreaks requiring reliable treatment options

You can find additional head lice treatments in our specialised collection if you need alternative options or complementary products for managing infestations.

Why Choose This Dermal Cream Formulation

The cream formulation provides better skin contact and penetration compared to lotions or shampoos. This ensures the active ingredient reaches the parasites effectively, particularly important for scabies mites that burrow into your skin.

The 5% concentration represents the standard strength recommended by healthcare professionals for treating scabies in adults and children. This concentration provides the right balance between effectiveness and tolerability for most patients.

Clinical Suitability and Storage Requirements

You should store this medicine below 25°C and keep it out of reach of children. Do not use the cream after the expiry date shown on the packaging, and always check the tube for any signs of damage before use.

The cream is suitable for single-use treatment courses, and you should not share your medication with others even if they have similar symptoms. Each person requires their own prescribed treatment to ensure proper dosing and prevent cross-contamination.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Apply Permethrin Dermal Cream

You should apply the cream to clean, dry skin from your neck down to your toes, including the soles of your feet. Pay particular attention to areas between your fingers and toes, under your nails, and around your wrists and ankles where scabies mites commonly burrow.

Massage the cream gently into your skin until it is completely absorbed. You should leave the cream on your skin for 8 to 14 hours before washing it off with soap and warm water. During this time, avoid bathing or showering to ensure the treatment remains effective.

Treatment Schedule and Reapplication

For scabies treatment, you typically need only one application, though your doctor may recommend a second application after one week if symptoms persist. All household members and close contacts should be treated simultaneously, even if they show no symptoms, to prevent re-infestation.

You should wash all clothing, bedding, and towels in hot water after treatment and dry them on a hot setting. Items that cannot be washed should be sealed in plastic bags for at least 72 hours to eliminate any remaining parasites.
