FreeStyle Libre Reader Flash Glucose Monitoring Device

The FreeStyle Libre Reader is a handheld scanning device designed to work with FreeStyle Libre sensors for continuous glucose monitoring. You can check your glucose levels by simply scanning the sensor applied to your arm, eliminating the need for routine finger prick blood tests. This flash glucose monitoring system provides real-time glucose readings and trends to help you manage your diabetes more effectively.

The reader displays your current glucose level, an arrow indicating whether your glucose is rising, falling, or staying steady, and an 8-hour glucose history graph. This information helps you understand how your glucose levels change throughout the day and make informed decisions about your diabetes management alongside our comprehensive diabetes monitoring range.

How the Flash Glucose Monitoring System Works

The FreeStyle Libre Reader uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to scan FreeStyle Libre sensors. When you hold the reader within 4cm of your sensor and press the scan button, it captures your glucose reading in less than one second. The device stores up to 90 days of glucose data, allowing you to track patterns and share information with your healthcare team.

Each scan provides a glucose reading that reflects your interstitial fluid glucose level from 1 minute ago. The reader can perform unlimited scans throughout the day, giving you the flexibility to check your glucose levels as often as needed without the discomfort of finger prick testing.

Who Should Use This Glucose Monitoring Device

The FreeStyle Libre Reader is suitable for adults and children aged 4 years and over with diabetes who use FreeStyle Libre sensors. It's particularly beneficial for people who want to reduce the frequency of finger prick blood glucose tests whilst maintaining good glucose control.

  • Adults with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes using insulin therapy
  • Children aged 4 years and over with diabetes (under adult supervision)
  • People who want to monitor glucose trends throughout the day
  • Individuals seeking to reduce finger prick testing frequency

Benefits of Flash Glucose Monitoring Technology

This glucose reader device eliminates the need for routine finger prick blood tests, making glucose monitoring more convenient and less painful. The device provides trend arrows that show whether your glucose is rising, falling, or remaining stable, helping you anticipate changes before they occur.

The 8-hour glucose history graph displayed on the reader helps you identify patterns in your glucose levels and understand how food, exercise, and medication affect your readings. This comprehensive data supports better diabetes management decisions and improved quality of life.

Device Storage and Battery Information

The FreeStyle Libre Reader features a rechargeable battery that typically lasts several days with normal use. You can charge the device using the provided USB cable and mains adapter. The reader should be stored at room temperature between 10°C and 45°C and kept away from extreme temperatures and moisture.

The device memory can store up to 90 days of glucose readings and scanning history. Regular data downloads to a computer or sharing with healthcare professionals helps maintain comprehensive glucose monitoring records for optimal diabetes management.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Use Your FreeStyle Libre Reader

Before first use, charge your FreeStyle Libre Reader fully using the provided USB cable and mains adapter. Turn on the device by pressing and holding the power button until the screen activates. Follow the on-screen setup instructions to configure your personal settings including time, date, and glucose units.

Ensure your FreeStyle Libre sensor is properly applied to your arm before attempting to scan. The sensor must be activated and the 60-minute warm-up period completed before you can obtain glucose readings.

Scanning Technique and Reading Results

To scan your sensor, hold the FreeStyle Libre Reader within 4cm of the sensor and press the scan button. Keep the reader steady until you hear a beep and see your glucose reading on the screen. The scan takes less than one second to complete.

Your glucose reading will appear along with a trend arrow indicating whether your glucose is rising rapidly, rising slowly, changing slowly, falling slowly, or falling rapidly. Review the 8-hour glucose history graph to understand your glucose patterns. You can scan as frequently as desired throughout the day to monitor your glucose levels.

Understanding Potential Issues with Flash Glucose Monitoring

Like all medical devices, the FreeStyle Libre Reader may occasionally experience technical issues, although most users find it reliable for daily glucose monitoring. Some people may experience minor skin reactions at the sensor site, though this relates to the sensor rather than the reader device itself. If you're managing multiple health conditions, our electrical health and diagnostic range offers additional monitoring solutions.

The most common issues reported include temporary connectivity problems between the reader and sensor, which usually resolve with proper scanning technique.

  • Temporary scanning difficulties requiring repositioning
  • Battery drainage requiring more frequent charging
  • Screen display issues in bright sunlight
  • Occasional error messages during scanning
  • Device freezing requiring restart
  • Memory storage reaching capacity
  • Connectivity issues with data transfer
  • Physical damage from drops or impacts
  • Water damage if exposed to excessive moisture
  • Temperature-related performance issues

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
