FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus Sensor for Continuous Glucose Monitoring

The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor is a continuous glucose monitoring system designed to help you manage your diabetes more effectively. This small, waterproof sensor attaches to the back of your upper arm and continuously measures glucose levels in your tissue fluid for up to 14 days. You can check your glucose readings, trends, and patterns by scanning the sensor with your smartphone or compatible reader device.

This glucose monitoring system eliminates the need for routine finger prick blood tests, providing you with real-time glucose data throughout the day and night. The sensor works alongside the FreeStyle LibreLink app, which stores your glucose history and provides insights into your glucose patterns to support better diabetes management decisions.

How the Continuous Glucose Monitoring Technology Works

The sensor uses a small, flexible filament that sits just under your skin to measure glucose levels in your interstitial fluid. When you scan the sensor with your smartphone or reader, it provides your current glucose reading, an eight-hour glucose history, and a trend arrow showing whether your glucose is rising, falling, or staying steady.

The system also includes optional alarms that can alert you when your glucose levels are too high or too low, helping you take action before potentially dangerous situations develop. These customisable alarms work even when you haven't scanned the sensor recently, providing continuous monitoring peace of mind.

Who Benefits from This Diabetes Sensor System

This diabetes sensor is suitable for adults and children aged 4 years and over with diabetes mellitus. It's particularly beneficial for people who want to reduce finger prick testing whilst maintaining tight glucose control. The system is designed for those seeking more detailed glucose information to inform their diabetes management decisions.

The sensor is ideal for people who:

  • Want to see glucose trends and patterns throughout the day
  • Need to monitor glucose levels during exercise or sleep
  • Wish to reduce the frequency of finger prick blood tests
  • Require detailed glucose data to adjust insulin or medication timing

For comprehensive diabetes care, you may also benefit from exploring our diabetes monitoring collection, which includes complementary testing supplies and management tools.

Why Choose Waterproof Glucose Monitoring

The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor is water-resistant up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes, allowing you to shower, bathe, swim, and exercise without removing the device. This waterproof design ensures continuous glucose monitoring even during your most active moments, providing uninterrupted data collection for better diabetes management.

The sensor's adhesive is designed to stay securely attached to your arm for the full 14-day wear period, even during physical activities and daily routines. This reliability means you can maintain your normal lifestyle whilst benefiting from continuous glucose insights.

Clinical Accuracy and Storage Requirements

The sensor should be stored at room temperature between 4°C and 30°C until you're ready to apply it. Each sensor is individually packaged and sterile until opened. The device has been clinically tested to ensure accuracy across a wide range of glucose levels, providing reliable readings that you can trust for diabetes management decisions.

Once applied, the sensor begins providing glucose readings within one hour of insertion. The system is calibrated during manufacturing, so no additional calibration with finger prick tests is required during normal use, though you should still perform finger prick tests when glucose readings don't match your symptoms.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Apply Your Glucose Sensor

Clean the back of your upper arm with an alcohol wipe and allow it to dry completely before application. Remove the sensor from its packaging and peel away the adhesive backing. Press the sensor applicator firmly against your skin and push down on the centre until you hear a click, indicating the sensor is properly inserted. Remove the applicator by lifting it straight up, leaving the sensor attached to your arm.

Scanning and Reading Instructions

Wait one hour after application before taking your first reading. Hold your smartphone or reader device within 4cm of the sensor and scan by bringing the device close to the sensor until you hear a beep or see the reading appear. You can scan the sensor as often as you like through clothing, and each scan provides your current glucose level, trend arrow, and eight-hour glucose history graph. The sensor will automatically store glucose data for up to eight hours between scans, ensuring you don't lose important information even if you forget to scan regularly.

It’s useful to have, but it regularly gives higher readings in the upper range than a pin prick test. Sometimes a difference of 2 plus points

Understanding Potential Side Effects

Like all medicines, the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most side effects are related to the sensor insertion site and are generally mild and temporary. If you're managing other health conditions, you might find our skin care products helpful for maintaining healthy skin around the sensor site.

The most commonly reported side effects include skin reactions at the insertion site, such as redness, itching, or irritation. These typically resolve within a few days of sensor removal.

Known side effects may include:

  • Redness or irritation at the insertion site
  • Itching around the sensor area
  • Skin discolouration where the adhesive was applied
  • Minor bleeding at the insertion point
  • Bruising around the sensor site
  • Allergic reaction to the adhesive
  • Skin rash or dermatitis
  • Swelling at the application site
  • Pain or tenderness during insertion
  • Scarring at the insertion site (rare)
  • Infection at the insertion site (rare)
  • Sensor adhesive residue remaining on skin

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
