Freestyle Libre 3 Sensor for Continuous Glucose Monitoring

The Freestyle Libre 3 sensor provides real-time glucose readings for people with diabetes, eliminating the need for routine finger prick tests. This small, wearable device continuously monitors your glucose levels for up to 14 days, sending readings directly to your smartphone or compatible device every minute.

You can track your glucose trends throughout the day and night, helping you make informed decisions about your diabetes management. The sensor is water-resistant and designed to stay securely attached during daily activities including showering, swimming, and exercise.

How the Continuous Glucose Monitoring System Works

The sensor uses a thin, flexible filament that sits just under your skin to measure glucose in your interstitial fluid. Once applied to the back of your upper arm, it automatically begins taking glucose readings and transmitting them to the FreeStyle Libre 3 app on your smartphone.

You receive real-time glucose readings, trend arrows showing whether your levels are rising or falling, and customisable alarms for high and low glucose events. The system provides a complete picture of your glucose patterns without requiring you to scan the sensor manually.

Who Benefits from This Glucose Monitoring System

This continuous glucose monitoring technology is suitable for adults and children aged 4 years and over with diabetes who want to reduce finger prick testing. It's particularly beneficial for people who need frequent glucose monitoring or experience unpredictable glucose fluctuations.

The sensor is ideal for those who:

  • Want to see real-time glucose trends and patterns
  • Need overnight glucose monitoring
  • Wish to reduce the frequency of finger prick tests
  • Require customisable glucose alarms and alerts

Healthcare professionals often recommend continuous glucose monitoring for people with type 1 diabetes, insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes, or those experiencing frequent hypoglycaemic episodes. You can explore our full range of diabetes monitoring solutions to find the right tools for your needs.

Why Choose Real-Time Glucose Monitoring

Unlike traditional blood glucose meters that provide single-point readings, this sensor offers continuous insights into your glucose levels. The real-time data helps you understand how food, exercise, medication, and stress affect your blood sugar throughout the day.

The system's minute-by-minute readings allow you to spot glucose trends before they become problematic, potentially preventing dangerous highs and lows. This proactive approach to diabetes management can lead to better glucose control and improved quality of life.

Clinical Accuracy and Storage Requirements

The sensor meets clinical accuracy standards for diabetes management and has been extensively tested in clinical studies. Each sensor is individually calibrated during manufacturing, so no user calibration is required once applied.

Store unopened sensors at room temperature between 4°C and 30°C. Do not freeze or expose to extreme temperatures. Each sensor has a 12-month shelf life from the date of manufacture when stored properly.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Apply Your Sensor

Clean the back of your upper arm with an alcohol wipe and allow to dry completely. Remove the sensor from its packaging and peel away the adhesive backing. Press the sensor applicator firmly against your skin and push down until you hear a click, indicating the sensor is properly inserted.

The sensor will automatically start taking readings within one hour of application. Download the FreeStyle Libre 3 app to your smartphone and follow the pairing instructions to connect your sensor. You'll receive a notification when the sensor is ready to provide glucose readings.

Using Your Continuous Glucose Monitor

Once activated, your sensor will automatically send glucose readings to your smartphone every minute. You can view your current glucose level, trend arrows, and glucose history directly in the app. Set up customisable alarms for high and low glucose levels according to your healthcare provider's recommendations.

The sensor remains active for 14 days from application. You'll receive notifications when it's time to replace your sensor. Remove the used sensor by gently peeling it away from your skin and dispose of it according to local regulations for medical waste.

Potential Side Effects and Skin Reactions

Like all medical devices, the Freestyle Libre 3 sensor can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most people tolerate the sensor well, but some may experience skin reactions at the application site. If you have sensitive skin or known adhesive allergies, discuss this with your healthcare provider before using electrical health and diagnostic devices like continuous glucose monitors.

The most commonly reported side effects involve skin reactions where the sensor is applied. These typically resolve once the sensor is removed.

Known side effects may include:

  • Skin redness or irritation at the application site
  • Itching around the sensor
  • Mild swelling where the sensor is attached
  • Skin discolouration after sensor removal
  • Allergic reaction to the adhesive
  • Minor bleeding when the sensor is inserted
  • Bruising at the application site
  • Skin dryness or flaking after removal
  • Temporary skin indentation
  • Rare cases of infection at the insertion site

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
