Freestyle Libre 2 Sensor for Continuous Glucose Monitoring

The Freestyle Libre 2 sensor provides continuous glucose monitoring for people with diabetes, offering real-time glucose readings without the need for routine finger prick tests. This small, waterproof sensor attaches to the back of your upper arm and continuously measures glucose levels in your tissue fluid for up to 14 days.

You can check your glucose levels by scanning the sensor with the FreeStyle Libre 2 reader or compatible smartphone app. The system also includes optional alarms that can alert you when your glucose levels are too high or too low, helping you manage your diabetes more effectively alongside your diabetes monitoring routine.

How the Sensor Technology Works

The sensor uses a thin, flexible filament that sits just under your skin to measure glucose in your interstitial fluid. This measurement correlates closely with blood glucose levels, providing accurate readings throughout the day and night.

Each scan takes less than one second and provides your current glucose reading, an eight-hour glucose history, and a trend arrow showing whether your glucose is rising, falling, or staying steady. The sensor stores up to eight hours of data, so you won't lose information even if you don't scan regularly.

Who Should Consider This Monitoring System

This continuous glucose monitoring system is suitable for adults and children aged 4 years and over with diabetes who want to reduce finger prick testing. It's particularly beneficial for people who need frequent glucose monitoring or those who experience unpredictable glucose fluctuations.

  • People with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes requiring intensive glucose monitoring
  • Those who want to reduce the frequency of finger prick blood tests
  • Individuals seeking better understanding of their glucose patterns
  • People who need overnight glucose monitoring without disrupting sleep

Why Choose Waterproof Design

The sensor's waterproof design means you can wear it whilst showering, swimming, or exercising without compromising its function. The adhesive is designed to stay secure for the full 14-day wear period, even during physical activities or in humid conditions.

The compact size and discreet profile make it comfortable to wear under clothing, and the sensor automatically starts working one hour after application. No calibration with finger prick tests is required during normal use.

Clinical Accuracy and Storage Requirements

Clinical studies have demonstrated that the FreeStyle Libre 2 system provides accurate glucose readings that correlate well with blood glucose measurements. The sensor should be stored at room temperature and applied using the provided applicator for proper insertion.

Each sensor is individually packaged and sterile until opened. Once applied, the sensor begins a one-hour warm-up period before providing readings. The system is designed to work reliably throughout the 14-day wear period without requiring replacement or maintenance.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Apply Your Sensor

Clean the back of your upper arm with an alcohol wipe and allow to dry completely. Remove the sensor pack lid and unscrew the cap from the sensor applicator. Place the applicator over the sensor pack and press down firmly until you hear a click, then lift the applicator with the sensor attached.

Position the applicator against the back of your upper arm and press down firmly in one smooth motion. The sensor will be inserted automatically and the applicator can then be discarded. The sensor will start working after a one-hour warm-up period.

Scanning and Reading Instructions

Hold your reader or smartphone within 4cm of the sensor and scan by pressing the scan button or opening the app. Each scan provides your current glucose level, an eight-hour history graph, and a trend arrow. You can scan as often as you like - there are no restrictions on scanning frequency.

The sensor stores eight hours of glucose data, so you need to scan at least once every eight hours to capture all your glucose information. If you don't scan within eight hours, you may lose some historical data, though current readings will still be available.

Potential Side Effects and Skin Reactions

Like all medicines, Freestyle Libre 2 sensors can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. If you experience persistent skin irritation, you should consider consulting your healthcare provider about skin care options or alternative monitoring methods.

The most commonly reported side effects include skin redness, itching, or irritation around the sensor site. These reactions typically resolve within a few days of sensor removal.

  • Skin redness or irritation at application site

  • Mild swelling at insertion point
  • Skin discolouration after sensor removal
  • Allergic reaction to adhesive
  • Bruising at application site
  • Temporary skin indentation
  • Bleeding at insertion point
