Daktarin Miconazole Oral Gel for Fungal Mouth Infections

Daktarin oral gel contains miconazole nitrate, an antifungal medicine that treats fungal infections in your mouth and throat. This gel formulation allows the active ingredient to remain in contact with the affected area for longer periods, helping to eliminate fungal organisms that cause oral thrush and other mouth infections.

You can use this treatment for oral candidiasis (thrush) in adults and children over 4 months of age. The gel works by disrupting the cell walls of fungi, preventing them from growing and spreading in your mouth.

How Miconazole Gel Works Against Fungal Infections

Miconazole belongs to a group of medicines called azole antifungals. It works by interfering with the production of ergosterol, a substance that fungi need to maintain their cell walls. Without ergosterol, the fungal cell walls become damaged and the organisms die.

The gel formulation ensures that miconazole oral gel stays in contact with the infected areas in your mouth for extended periods. This prolonged contact time helps ensure thorough treatment of the fungal infection and reduces the likelihood of the infection returning.

Who Can Use Daktarin Oral Gel

This antifungal treatment is suitable for adults and children over 4 months of age who have been diagnosed with oral thrush or other fungal mouth infections. It's particularly useful for people who experience recurrent oral candidiasis or those with conditions that make them more susceptible to fungal infections.

Daktarin oral gel is appropriate for:

  • Adults with oral thrush or candidiasis
  • Children over 4 months with fungal mouth infections
  • People with dentures who develop fungal infections
  • Those seeking targeted treatment for mouth and throat fungal conditions

If you're looking for other fungal infection treatments, you can explore our athletes foot and fungal infections collection for additional antifungal options.

Why Choose Gel Formulation for Oral Treatment

The gel formulation offers distinct advantages over other dosage forms for treating oral fungal infections. Unlike tablets or capsules, the gel allows direct application to the affected areas in your mouth, ensuring maximum contact with the infection site.

This targeted approach means the medicine works exactly where it's needed most. The gel also has a pleasant taste and texture, making it easier to use, especially for children who may find other formulations difficult to take.

Storage and Handling Requirements

Store your Daktarin oral gel at room temperature, below 25°C, and keep it out of reach of children. Do not use the gel after the expiry date printed on the tube. Once opened, use the gel within the timeframe specified on the packaging.

Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use to maintain the gel's effectiveness. If you notice any changes in colour, consistency, or smell, do not use the product and consult your pharmacist.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Apply Daktarin Oral Gel

Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the gel. For adults and children over 2 years, apply the gel to the affected areas in your mouth using a clean finger or the applicator provided. Spread a thin layer over the infected areas, including your tongue, gums, and inside of your cheeks as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.

Apply the gel after meals and before bedtime to ensure it remains in contact with the affected areas for as long as possible. Avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after application to allow the medicine to work effectively.

Treatment Duration and Frequency

Continue using the gel for the full course of treatment as recommended by your healthcare provider, even if your symptoms improve. This helps prevent the infection from returning. For most oral thrush infections, treatment typically continues for several days after symptoms have cleared.

If your symptoms do not improve after one week of treatment, or if they worsen, consult your doctor or pharmacist. They may need to reassess your condition or consider alternative treatment options.
