Aerochamber Plus Flow-vu Anti-Static Spacer Device

The Aerochamber Plus Flow-vu is an inhaler spacer designed to improve the delivery of medication from your pressurised metered dose inhaler (pMDI). This anti-static spacer device helps ensure more medication reaches your lungs rather than staying in your mouth or throat. The Flow-vu indicator provides visual feedback to help you coordinate your breathing with medication delivery.

This spacer device is suitable for use with most standard pMDI inhalers and can be used by adults and children. The anti-static chamber reduces medication build-up on the walls, ensuring consistent dose delivery. You can find this product alongside other respiratory support items in our first aid collection.

How the Anti-Static Chamber Works

When you use a standard inhaler without a spacer, much of the medication can stick to your mouth and throat instead of reaching your lungs. The aerochamber spacer device creates a holding chamber that allows the medication particles to slow down and become smaller, making them easier to inhale deeply into your lungs.

The anti-static properties prevent medication from clinging to the chamber walls, ensuring you receive the full dose prescribed by your doctor. The Flow-vu indicator moves when you breathe in correctly, helping you achieve the proper inhalation technique.

Who Should Use This Spacer Device

This spacer device is particularly beneficial for people who have difficulty coordinating their breathing with inhaler activation. It's suitable for patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other respiratory conditions requiring inhaled medication.

  • Adults and children who struggle with inhaler technique
  • Patients experiencing throat irritation from direct inhaler use
  • Those prescribed high-dose inhaled corticosteroids
  • People who want to maximise medication delivery to their lungs

Benefits of Anti-Static Technology

The anti-static coating prevents electrostatic charge build-up inside the chamber, which can cause medication particles to stick to the walls. This technology ensures more consistent dose delivery compared to standard plastic spacers that may accumulate static charge over time.

Regular spacers can lose up to 50% of medication to the chamber walls due to static attraction. The anti-static properties of this device help maintain medication availability for inhalation, potentially improving treatment outcomes.

Cleaning and Maintenance Requirements

You should clean your spacer device weekly with warm soapy water and allow it to air dry completely. Avoid using detergents or disinfectants that may damage the anti-static coating. Replace the device every 12 months or as recommended by your healthcare provider to maintain optimal performance.

Store the spacer in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight. Check regularly for cracks or damage that could affect the seal with your inhaler.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Use Your Spacer Device

Remove the cap from your inhaler and shake it well. Insert the inhaler mouthpiece into the rubber seal at the back of the spacer, ensuring a tight fit. Place the spacer mouthpiece in your mouth and seal your lips around it. Press down on your inhaler once to release a dose into the chamber.

Breathe in slowly and deeply through the spacer mouthpiece. The Flow-vu indicator should move, showing you are breathing correctly. Hold your breath for 10 seconds if possible, then breathe out slowly. If you need a second dose, wait 30 seconds before repeating the process.

Proper Assembly and Maintenance

Before first use, wash all parts except the inhaler in warm soapy water and allow to air dry completely. Assemble the spacer by connecting the two halves until they click together securely. Check that the one-way valve moves freely and the mouthpiece is clean.

After each use, rinse your mouth with water to remove any residual medication. Clean the spacer weekly by taking it apart and washing in warm soapy water. Allow all parts to air dry naturally - do not use towels as these can create static charge.

Understanding Potential Side Effects

Like all medicines, the Aerochamber Plus Flow-vu Anti-Static can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most side effects are related to the medication being delivered rather than the spacer device itself. You may find additional respiratory support products in our allergy and hay fever collection .

The most common issues relate to improper cleaning or maintenance of the device, which can lead to reduced medication delivery or potential infection risk. Some users may experience initial difficulty with the breathing technique required.

Possible side effects may include:

  • Throat irritation if the device is not cleaned properly
  • Reduced medication effectiveness due to poor technique
  • Mouth or throat infections from inadequate cleaning
  • Difficulty coordinating breathing initially
  • Medication taste in mouth
  • Coughing during initial use
  • Dry mouth sensation
  • Voice changes if using steroid inhalers

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
