Treclin (Tretinoin) Gel

What is Treclin Gel and How Does It Work

Treclin Gel is a prescription acne treatment that combines two active ingredients: tretinoin 0.025% and clindamycin phosphate 1.2%. Tretinoin belongs to a group of medicines called retinoids, which work by normalising skin cell turnover and preventing the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads). Clindamycin is an antibiotic that reduces the bacteria on your skin that contribute to acne inflammation.

This dual-action formulation targets multiple causes of acne simultaneously. The tretinoin component helps unclog pores and reduces the formation of new acne lesions, while clindamycin tackles the bacterial component of acne, particularly Propionibacterium acnes. Together, these ingredients provide a comprehensive approach to acne treatment.

Active Ingredients and Formulation

Each gram of Treclin Gel contains tretinoin 0.25mg (0.025%) and clindamycin phosphate equivalent to 12mg (1.2%) clindamycin. The gel base is designed for optimal absorption and skin tolerance. The tretinoin in this formulation is a form of vitamin A that has been clinically proven to treat acne by affecting skin cell development and turnover.

The gel formulation is specifically chosen because it provides good skin penetration while being less irritating than some other topical preparations. This makes it suitable for patients who may have experienced irritation with other retinoid treatments.

Who Can Use Treclin Gel

Treclin Gel is prescribed for patients aged 12 years and older who have acne vulgaris. Your doctor will determine if this treatment is appropriate for your specific type and severity of acne. It is particularly effective for inflammatory acne that includes papules and pustules, as well as comedonal acne.

  • Suitable for patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris
  • Can be used on face, chest, and back areas affected by acne
  • Prescribed for both adolescent and adult acne
  • May be recommended as first-line treatment or when other treatments have been insufficient

Treatment Duration and Expectations

You should expect to use Treclin Gel for several months to see full benefits. Initial improvements may be visible after 4-6 weeks of regular use, but significant improvement typically occurs after 8-12 weeks of treatment. Your doctor will monitor your progress and may adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

Some patients may experience a temporary worsening of acne during the first few weeks of treatment, known as "purging." This is normal and occurs as the tretinoin brings underlying comedones to the surface more quickly. Continuing treatment as prescribed is important for achieving the best results.

Important Precautions and Contraindications

You should not use Treclin Gel if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as tretinoin can cause birth defects. You should also avoid this treatment if you have a known allergy to tretinoin, clindamycin, or any other ingredients in the gel. If you have a history of colitis or inflammatory bowel conditions, discuss this with your doctor before starting treatment.

During treatment, your skin may become more sensitive to sunlight, so you should use appropriate sun protection and limit sun exposure. Avoid using other potentially irritating skincare products, particularly those containing alcohol, astringents, or other acne treatments unless specifically advised by your doctor. If you need additional nutritional support during your treatment, speak to your pharmacist about suitable options.

How to Apply Treclin Gel

Before applying Treclin Gel, wash your hands thoroughly and gently cleanse the affected areas with a mild, non-medicated cleanser. Pat your skin dry and wait 20-30 minutes before applying the gel to ensure your skin is completely dry. Apply a thin layer of gel to the entire affected area, not just individual spots. Use only enough gel to cover the area with a thin film.

Apply the gel once daily in the evening before bedtime. Avoid the eye area, lips, and mucous membranes. After application, wash your hands thoroughly to remove any residual gel. Do not apply the gel to broken, sunburned, or severely irritated skin.

Treatment Schedule and Skin Adjustment

Start by using Treclin Gel every other evening for the first week to allow your skin to adjust to the treatment. If your skin tolerates this well without excessive irritation, you can increase to daily evening application. If you experience significant irritation, reduce the frequency of application and gradually increase as your skin becomes more tolerant.

Continue treatment exactly as prescribed by your doctor, even if you do not see immediate improvement. Most patients require 8-12 weeks of consistent use to achieve optimal results. Do not stop treatment suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this may lead to a return of acne symptoms.

Like all medicines, Treclin Gel can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The most common side effects are related to skin irritation and typically occur during the first few weeks of treatment as your skin adjusts to the medication. These effects often improve with continued use as your skin becomes accustomed to the treatment.

Most side effects are mild and manageable, but you should be aware of what to expect during your treatment. If you experience persistent or severe reactions, you may need to adjust your application frequency or switch to gentler cleansing products during your treatment period.

  • Skin dryness and peeling
  • Mild burning or stinging sensation upon application
  • Redness and irritation at application sites
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Temporary worsening of acne in first few weeks
  • Skin tightness or feeling of stretched skin
  • Mild itching or tingling
  • Changes in skin pigmentation
  • Contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals
  • Eye irritation if accidentally applied near eyes

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
