Otrivine Congestion Relief Nasal Decongestant Spray 0.1% for Blocked Nose

How Does Xylometazoline Hydrochloride Work for Nasal Congestion?

Otrivine Congestion Relief contains xylometazoline hydrochloride 0.1%, which belongs to a group of medicines called sympathomimetic decongestants. When you spray this nasal decongestant spray into your nostrils, it works by narrowing the blood vessels in your nasal passages. This reduces swelling and inflammation in the nasal tissues, allowing you to breathe more easily through your nose.

The active ingredient provides rapid relief from nasal congestion caused by colds, sinusitis, or allergic rhinitis. You should notice an improvement in your breathing within minutes of application, with effects typically lasting up to 10 hours. This makes it particularly useful when you need quick relief from a blocked nose that's affecting your sleep or daily activities.

What Conditions Does This Nasal Spray Treat?

This nasal spray is indicated for the symptomatic relief of nasal congestion in adults and children over 12 years of age. You can use it to treat blocked nose symptoms associated with various conditions including the common cold, flu, sinusitis, and hay fever. Many people find it helpful alongside other allergy and hay fever treatments during peak pollen seasons.

The spray is particularly effective for:

  • Nasal congestion due to upper respiratory tract infections
  • Blocked nose caused by allergic rhinitis or hay fever
  • Sinus congestion and pressure
  • Stuffy nose that interferes with sleep or breathing

Key Benefits of Otrivine 0.1% Nasal Spray

This nasal spray offers fast-acting relief that begins working within minutes of application. The 0.1% concentration of xylometazoline hydrochloride provides effective decongestant action for adults and adolescents over 12 years. Each 10ml bottle contains approximately 70 doses, making it a convenient option for managing nasal congestion episodes.

The spray format allows for precise application directly to the affected nasal passages, ensuring the medicine reaches where it's needed most. Unlike oral decongestants, topical nasal sprays like Otrivine work locally in your nose, which can mean fewer systemic side effects for many users.

Important Safety Information Before Using This Medicine

You should not use Otrivine Congestion Relief for more than 7 consecutive days without medical advice, as prolonged use can lead to rebound congestion. This means your nasal congestion may return or worsen when you stop using the spray. If your symptoms persist beyond 7 days or worsen during treatment, consult your pharmacist or doctor.

Do not exceed the recommended dose or frequency of use. This medicine is not suitable for children under 12 years of age. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain medical conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or thyroid disorders, speak to your healthcare provider before using this product.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Use Otrivine Nasal Spray Correctly

Before first use, remove the protective cap and prime the spray by pressing the pump several times until a fine mist appears. Gently blow your nose to clear your nostrils before application. Tilt your head slightly forward and insert the nozzle into one nostril, ensuring it points away from the nasal septum towards the outer wall of your nose.

Press down firmly on the pump while breathing in gently through your nose. Repeat in the other nostril if needed. After use, wipe the nozzle clean and replace the protective cap. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling the spray.

Recommended Dosage and Frequency

Adults and children over 12 years should use one spray in each nostril up to three times daily. Do not use more frequently than every 8 hours. The effects typically last between 8-10 hours, so you shouldn't need to use it more often than the recommended frequency.

Do not use this nasal spray for more than 7 consecutive days. If your symptoms haven't improved after 3 days of treatment, or if they worsen at any time, stop using the product and consult your pharmacist or doctor for further advice.
