Otrivine Child Nasal Drops - Effective Relief for Blocked Noses

What Are Otrivine Child Nasal Drops?

These nasal drops contain xylometazoline hydrochloride, a decongestant that works by narrowing the blood vessels in your child's nasal passages. This action reduces swelling and congestion, making it easier for your child to breathe through their nose. The drops are specifically formulated for children and provide temporary relief from nasal congestion caused by colds, sinusitis, or allergies.

The 10ml bottle contains a measured dose dispenser that allows you to administer the correct amount safely. Each drop delivers a precise concentration of the active ingredient, ensuring your child receives appropriate treatment for their symptoms. If your child is also experiencing other cold symptoms, you may find our cold and flu collection helpful for additional relief options.

How Do These Nasal Drops Work?

Xylometazoline belongs to a group of medicines called sympathomimetic decongestants. When you apply the drops to your child's nasal passages, the active ingredient acts on alpha-adrenergic receptors in the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa. This causes the blood vessels to constrict, reducing blood flow to the area and decreasing swelling of the nasal tissues.

The decongestant effect typically begins within minutes of application and can last for several hours. This rapid action helps restore normal nasal breathing and can improve your child's comfort during illness. The otrivine child nasal drops are designed to provide relief without causing the rebound congestion that can occur with some other decongestant products when used as directed.

When Should You Use These Drops?

You can use these nasal drops when your child has a blocked nose due to various conditions. They are particularly effective for congestion associated with common colds, upper respiratory tract infections, sinusitis, and allergic rhinitis. The drops can help your child sleep better at night and feed more comfortably during the day when nasal congestion is interfering with these activities.

  • Relief from nasal congestion due to colds and flu
  • Treatment of blocked nose caused by sinusitis
  • Management of allergic rhinitis symptoms
  • Temporary relief to aid comfortable sleeping and feeding

Important Safety Information

These drops are suitable for children aged 2 to 6 years old. You should not use them for more than 7 consecutive days, as prolonged use can lead to rebound congestion when treatment is stopped. Do not exceed the recommended dose, and ensure you follow the instructions carefully to avoid potential side effects.

If your child's symptoms persist or worsen after using the drops, or if they develop a fever, you should consult your doctor. These drops should not be used if your child has certain medical conditions or is taking specific medications, so always check with your pharmacist if you are unsure about suitability.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Administer Otrivine Child Nasal Drops

Before using the drops, ensure your hands are clean and the bottle tip is sterile. Tilt your child's head back slightly or have them lie down with their head tilted back. Gently insert the dropper tip into one nostril, being careful not to insert it too deeply. Squeeze the bottle gently to release the prescribed number of drops into the nostril, then repeat the process for the other nostril if directed.

After administration, have your child remain in the tilted position for a few moments to allow the medication to spread throughout the nasal passage. Wipe away any excess liquid from around the nose with a clean tissue. Clean the dropper tip with a tissue after each use and replace the cap securely to maintain sterility.

Dosage Guidelines for Children

The specific dosage will depend on your child's age and the severity of their congestion. Always follow the instructions provided with the product or those given by your pharmacist or doctor. Do not exceed the recommended dose or frequency of administration, as this can increase the risk of side effects.

You should not use these drops for more than 7 consecutive days. If your child's symptoms have not improved after this time, or if they worsen at any point during treatment, discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider for further advice.

Potential Side Effects of Nasal Decongestant Drops

Like all medicines, Otrivine Child Nasal Drops can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most side effects are mild and temporary, resolving once treatment is discontinued. If your child experiences persistent or concerning symptoms, you should seek advice from healthcare professionals in our baby and toddler section or consult your pharmacist directly.

The most commonly reported side effects include temporary stinging or burning sensation in the nose immediately after application, and mild irritation of the nasal passages. Some children may also experience sneezing shortly after the drops are administered.
