Optrex Hay Fever Eye Drops for Seasonal Allergy Relief

You can find relief from itchy, watery eyes caused by hay fever with these specially formulated eye drops. The drops contain sodium cromoglicate, an anti-allergy medicine that helps prevent the release of histamine and other substances that cause allergic reactions in your eyes. When pollen and other allergens trigger your hay fever symptoms, these drops work directly at the source of irritation to provide targeted relief.

Each 10ml bottle provides multiple doses to help manage your symptoms throughout the hay fever season. The drops are designed to be gentle on your eyes while effectively reducing the uncomfortable symptoms that can disrupt your daily activities during peak pollen periods.

How Sodium Cromoglicate Works Against Allergic Reactions

The active ingredient sodium cromoglicate belongs to a group of medicines called mast cell stabilisers. When you're exposed to allergens like pollen, your body's mast cells release histamine and other inflammatory substances that cause the typical hay fever symptoms in your eyes. Sodium cromoglicate works by preventing these mast cells from releasing these substances, thereby reducing inflammation and allergic reactions.

This preventative action means the drops work most effectively when you start using them before your symptoms become severe. Regular use during hay fever season helps maintain a protective barrier against allergens, giving you better control over your eye symptoms. You can find these and other allergy and hay fever treatments to help manage your seasonal symptoms comprehensively.

Who Can Benefit from These Antihistamine Eye Drops

These drops are suitable for adults and children over 6 years who experience hay fever symptoms affecting their eyes. You may find them particularly helpful if you suffer from seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, where your eyes become red, itchy, and watery in response to airborne allergens.

The drops are especially beneficial for people who experience:

  • Itchy, irritated eyes during pollen season
  • Excessive tearing and watery discharge
  • Red, inflamed conjunctiva
  • Burning or stinging sensations in the eyes

You should not use these drops if you're allergic to sodium cromoglicate or any other ingredients in the formulation. If you wear contact lenses, you'll need to remove them before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.

Why Preservative-Free Formulation Matters

These hay fever eye drops are formulated without preservatives, making them gentler on your eyes, especially with frequent use during hay fever season. Preservatives in eye drops can sometimes cause additional irritation or allergic reactions, particularly in people with sensitive eyes or those who need to use drops regularly.

The preservative-free formulation reduces the risk of developing sensitivity reactions while maintaining the effectiveness of the active ingredient. This makes the drops suitable for long-term use throughout the hay fever season without increasing the likelihood of eye irritation from the treatment itself.

Storage and Shelf Life Considerations

You should store these drops at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat. Once opened, the bottle should be used within 28 days to maintain sterility and effectiveness. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use and avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including your eye, to prevent contamination.

The drops should be discarded after the 28-day period even if there's remaining solution in the bottle. This precaution is particularly important with preservative-free formulations, as they don't contain ingredients to prevent bacterial growth over extended periods once opened.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

Recommended Dosage for Adults and Children

You should apply one to two drops into each affected eye up to four times daily. For children over 6 years, the same dosage applies, but adult supervision is recommended during application. The drops can be used as needed when symptoms occur, or regularly during hay fever season for preventative effect.

For optimal results, you may find it helpful to start using the drops before your hay fever season begins, as the preventative action of sodium cromoglicate works more effectively when treatment starts before exposure to allergens becomes intense.

Proper Application Technique

You should wash your hands thoroughly before handling the bottle. Tilt your head back slightly and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the bottle above your eye and squeeze gently to release the drop into the pocket, being careful not to touch your eye or eyelid with the dropper tip.

After applying the drops, you should close your eyes gently and press lightly on the inner corner of your eye for about one minute. This helps prevent the drops from draining away too quickly and improves absorption. If you need to apply drops to both eyes, repeat the process for the second eye using the same technique.

Understanding Potential Side Effects

Like all medicines, Optrex Hay Fever Relief Drops can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most people tolerate these drops well, but you should be aware of possible reactions that may occur. If you experience persistent or concerning symptoms, you can explore additional eye care products or consult your pharmacist for alternative treatments.

The most commonly reported side effects are usually mild and temporary, affecting the area where you apply the drops. These typically occur shortly after application and resolve quickly as your eyes adjust to the treatment.

Possible side effects may include:

  • Temporary stinging or burning sensation upon application
  • Mild eye irritation or discomfort
  • Temporary blurred vision immediately after application
  • Increased tear production
  • Redness of the eye or eyelid
  • Dry eyes or feeling of grittiness
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Headache
  • Taste disturbance if drops drain into throat
  • Swelling of eyelids
  • Eye discharge
  • Feeling of something in the eye

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
