Opticrom Eye Drops for Allergic Conjunctivitis Relief

How Sodium Cromoglicate Works to Prevent Eye Allergies

You can use these drops to prevent and treat the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis caused by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. The active ingredient sodium cromoglicate works by stabilising mast cells in your eyes, preventing them from releasing histamine and other inflammatory substances that cause redness, itching, and watering.

When you apply the drops regularly, they create a protective barrier that helps prevent allergic reactions from occurring. This makes them particularly effective when used before exposure to known allergens, such as during hay fever season or when visiting homes with pets. For comprehensive allergy management, you may also benefit from exploring our allergy and hay fever treatments range.

What Conditions Do These Drops Treat?

These opticrom eye drops are specifically formulated to treat seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis. You may experience relief from symptoms including persistent eye itching, excessive tearing, redness of the conjunctiva, and the gritty sensation often described as having sand in your eyes.

The drops are suitable for treating allergic reactions triggered by various environmental allergens. They work effectively for both immediate allergic responses and can help prevent symptoms when used prophylactically before allergen exposure.

Who Can Use Sodium Cromoglicate Eye Drops?

Adults and children over 4 years of age can use these drops safely when following the recommended dosage instructions. You should ensure proper hygiene when applying the drops and avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including your eye, to prevent contamination.

The following groups should take particular care or seek medical advice before use:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider
  • People wearing contact lenses should remove them before application
  • Those with existing eye infections or injuries
  • Individuals taking other eye medications concurrently

Storage and Handling Requirements

You should store the drops at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Once opened, the bottle should be used within 28 days to maintain sterility and effectiveness. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use and ensure the dropper tip remains clean and uncontaminated.

Always check the expiry date before use and dispose of any expired medication safely through your local pharmacy's disposal service. Do not share your eye drops with others, even if they have similar symptoms.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

Recommended Dosage for Adults and Children

You should instil one to two drops into each affected eye four times daily. For optimal results, space the doses evenly throughout the day, such as morning, midday, early evening, and bedtime. The frequency may be reduced once your symptoms improve, but continue using the drops for the full duration recommended by your healthcare provider.

Children over 4 years should use the same dosage as adults, but may require supervision during application to ensure proper technique and dosage accuracy.

Proper Application Technique

Before applying the drops, wash your hands thoroughly and remove contact lenses if you wear them. Tilt your head back slightly and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper above your eye without touching it to your eye or eyelid, then squeeze the bottle gently to release the prescribed number of drops.

After application, close your eyes gently for one to two minutes and avoid blinking excessively. You can reinsert contact lenses 15 minutes after application if the drops do not contain preservatives, or as directed by your healthcare provider. If you use multiple eye medications, wait at least 5 minutes between different products.

You can find additional support for managing eye care concerns through our comprehensive range of treatments.
