Dalacin Cream for Bacterial Vaginosis Treatment

Dalacin cream contains clindamycin phosphate, a prescription antibiotic specifically formulated to treat bacterial vaginosis. This topical treatment works directly at the site of infection to restore the natural balance of bacteria in your vagina. Dalacin cream is applied intravaginally using the applicators provided, allowing the active ingredient to target harmful bacteria whilst minimising systemic absorption.

Your doctor may prescribe this clindamycin cream when you have symptoms such as unusual vaginal discharge, fishy odour, or irritation caused by bacterial vaginosis. The cream formulation provides targeted delivery of the antibiotic directly to the affected area, which can be more effective than oral treatments for some patients.

How Clindamycin Works Against Bacterial Infections

Clindamycin phosphate belongs to a group of antibiotics called lincosamides. It works by inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria, preventing them from growing and multiplying. This action helps eliminate the harmful bacteria responsible for bacterial vaginosis whilst allowing beneficial bacteria to restore the natural vaginal environment.

The antibiotic specifically targets anaerobic bacteria commonly associated with bacterial vaginosis, including Gardnerella vaginalis and Bacteroides species. By reducing these harmful bacteria, the treatment helps alleviate symptoms and restore normal vaginal pH levels.

Who Should Use This Bacterial Vaginosis Treatment

Your healthcare provider may recommend this antibiotic cream if you have been diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis through clinical examination or laboratory testing. The treatment is suitable for adult women who can safely use intravaginal medications and follow the prescribed application schedule.

This vaginal infection treatment may be particularly appropriate if you:

  • Have confirmed bacterial vaginosis with typical symptoms
  • Prefer topical treatment over oral antibiotics
  • Have experienced gastrointestinal side effects with oral clindamycin
  • Need targeted treatment with minimal systemic exposure

You can find additional creams and ointments for various conditions through our comprehensive range of topical treatments.

Why Intravaginal Application Offers Targeted Relief

The cream formulation allows direct application to the affected area, providing high local concentrations of the antibiotic where it is needed most. This targeted approach can result in faster symptom relief compared to systemic treatments, as the medication works directly on the site of infection.

Intravaginal application also reduces the likelihood of gastrointestinal side effects commonly associated with oral antibiotics. The localised treatment approach means lower amounts of the medication enter your bloodstream, potentially reducing the risk of systemic side effects whilst maintaining therapeutic effectiveness.

Clinical Suitability and Storage Requirements

Store your medication at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze the cream, as this may affect its consistency and effectiveness. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use and ensure the applicators remain clean and dry.

Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your healthcare provider, even if your symptoms improve before finishing all the medication. Stopping treatment early may allow bacteria to return and could contribute to antibiotic resistance.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Apply Dalacin Cream Correctly

Your doctor will provide specific instructions for your treatment course, typically involving once-daily application for seven consecutive days. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after each application. Fill the applicator with the prescribed amount of cream by screwing it onto the tube and squeezing gently until the plunger is pushed out to the required measurement.

Insert the filled applicator gently into your vagina whilst lying down, preferably at bedtime. Push the plunger slowly to release the cream, then carefully remove the applicator. After use, pull the plunger from the barrel and wash both parts with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and allow to air dry completely before the next use.

Important Application Guidelines

Apply the cream at approximately the same time each day to maintain consistent levels of medication. Avoid sexual intercourse during treatment, as the cream may weaken latex condoms and diaphragms. You may experience some leakage of the cream, so consider using a sanitary pad to protect your clothing.

Do not use tampons during treatment as they may absorb the medication and reduce its effectiveness. If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled application. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.

Understanding Potential Side Effects

Like all medicines, Dalacin cream can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most side effects are mild and resolve once treatment is completed, but you should be aware of what to expect during your course of treatment. If you experience any concerning symptoms, our women's health section provides additional resources and support options.

The most commonly reported side effects include local irritation at the application site, such as burning, itching, or increased vaginal discharge. Some women may experience temporary changes in vaginal pH or mild abdominal discomfort during treatment.

Known side effects may include:

  • Vaginal burning or stinging sensation
  • Itching or irritation around the vaginal area
  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Mild abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Skin rash or allergic reaction
  • Urinary tract symptoms
  • Vaginal candidiasis (thrush)

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
