Dalacin Clindamycin Antibiotic for Bacterial Infections

Dalacin contains clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic that treats serious bacterial infections when other antibiotics may not be suitable. You can use this medicine to treat infections of the skin, soft tissues, respiratory tract, and other areas of your body where bacteria have caused infection.

This prescription medicine works by stopping bacteria from producing proteins they need to survive and multiply. Your doctor will prescribe Dalacin when they determine that clindamycin is the most appropriate treatment for your specific bacterial infection.

How Clindamycin Works Against Bacterial Infections

Clindamycin belongs to a group of antibiotics called lincosamides. It works by binding to bacterial ribosomes and preventing them from making essential proteins. Without these proteins, the bacteria cannot grow, reproduce, or maintain their cellular functions.

This mechanism makes clindamycin antibiotic particularly effective against gram-positive bacteria and certain anaerobic bacteria. Your infection should begin to improve within a few days of starting treatment, though you must complete the full course as prescribed by your doctor.

Who Can Use Dalacin Capsules

Your doctor may prescribe Dalacin if you have a bacterial infection that requires clindamycin treatment. This medicine is suitable for adults and children over 12 years of age, depending on the specific infection and your medical history.

Dalacin may be prescribed for various bacterial infections including:

  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Dental infections

You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to clindamycin or lincomycin, or if you have a history of antibiotic-associated colitis. Always inform your doctor about any previous antibiotic reactions before starting treatment. For other bacterial infection treatments, you can explore our skin care collection.

Why Dalacin Is Prescribed for Serious Infections

Doctors choose clindamycin when other antibiotics may not be effective or suitable for your particular infection. This antibiotic has good tissue penetration, meaning it can reach infected areas effectively, including bone and abscesses.

Clindamycin is particularly valuable for treating infections caused by bacteria that may be resistant to other antibiotics. Your doctor will consider factors such as the type of bacteria causing your infection, your medical history, and any allergies you may have when deciding if Dalacin is right for you.

Clinical Suitability and Storage Requirements

Store your Dalacin capsules at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep them in their original container and out of reach of children. Do not use the capsules after the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Your doctor will determine if Dalacin is clinically suitable for you based on your infection type, medical history, and current medications. Regular monitoring may be required during treatment, particularly for longer courses or if you have underlying health conditions.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Take Dalacin Capsules

Take your Dalacin capsules exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the capsules whole with a full glass of water. You can take them with or without food, though taking them with food may help reduce stomach upset. Do not crush, chew, or open the capsules as this can affect how the medicine works.

Dosage and Treatment Duration

Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose and treatment duration based on your infection type, severity, and individual circumstances. Take your doses at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day to maintain consistent levels of the antibiotic in your body. Complete the full course of treatment even if you feel better, as stopping early may allow the infection to return or become resistant to treatment.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Potential Side Effects of Dalacin

Like all medicines, Dalacin can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. If you develop severe diarrhoea during or after treatment, contact your doctor immediately as this could indicate a serious condition called antibiotic-associated colitis. For additional support with digestive health concerns, visit our indigestion collection.

The most common side effects include stomach upset, nausea, and changes in bowel movements. These effects are usually mild and resolve as your body adjusts to the medicine.

Known side effects may include:

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Headache
