Canesten Thrush Cream - Effective Internal Treatment

You can treat vaginal thrush effectively with this internal cream that contains clotrimazole, a clinically proven antifungal medicine. This treatment works directly at the site of infection to eliminate the Candida fungus that causes thrush symptoms including itching, discharge, and discomfort.

The 5g tube provides a complete single-dose treatment that you can apply internally using the applicator provided. This canesten thrush cream offers a convenient alternative to pessaries or tablets for women who prefer cream formulations.

How Clotrimazole Treats Fungal Infections

Clotrimazole belongs to a group of medicines called azole antifungals. It works by disrupting the cell membrane of the Candida fungus, preventing it from growing and reproducing. This action eliminates the infection and relieves your symptoms.

The cream formulation allows the active ingredient to remain in contact with the affected area for an extended period, ensuring thorough treatment of the infection. You should notice improvement in your symptoms within a few days of application.

Who Can Use This Vaginal Thrush Treatment

This internal cream is suitable for women aged 16 to 60 years who have been diagnosed with vaginal thrush. You can use it if you have experienced thrush symptoms before and recognise the signs, or following diagnosis by your doctor or pharmacist.

The treatment is appropriate if you experience:

  • Vaginal itching and irritation
  • Thick, white vaginal discharge
  • Soreness around the vaginal area
  • Pain or discomfort during urination

You should not use this product if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 16 years of age. If you have diabetes or a weakened immune system, consult your pharmacist before use. For comprehensive treatment options, explore our thrush collection which includes various formulations.

Why Choose Internal Cream Over Other Treatments

Internal cream offers several advantages over other thrush treatments. Unlike pessaries, the cream does not require insertion of a solid tablet, making it more comfortable for some women. The smooth consistency allows for easier application and better distribution throughout the vaginal area.

The single-dose treatment means you only need to apply it once, unlike some treatments that require multiple applications. This reduces the risk of incomplete treatment and ensures you receive the full therapeutic dose needed to clear the infection.

Storage and Shelf Life Considerations

You should store this cream below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Do not use the product after the expiry date printed on the packaging, as the effectiveness may be reduced.

Once opened, use the cream immediately and dispose of any remaining product and the applicator after treatment. Do not save partial tubes for future use, as this increases the risk of contamination and reduced effectiveness.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Apply Internal Thrush Cream

You should apply this cream once, preferably at bedtime when you can lie down afterwards. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after application. Remove the cap from the tube and screw the applicator onto the tube opening until it fits securely.

Squeeze the tube gently to fill the applicator with cream until the plunger stops moving. Lie on your back with your knees bent and gently insert the applicator as far as comfortably possible into your vagina. Push the plunger slowly to release all the cream, then remove the applicator carefully.

Important Application Guidelines

You should use the entire contents of the tube in one application for the treatment to be effective. Do not use tampons while using this treatment, as they may absorb the medicine and reduce its effectiveness. You can use sanitary towels if needed to protect your clothing from any discharge.

Avoid sexual intercourse during treatment, as the cream may reduce the effectiveness of latex condoms and diaphragms. Complete the full treatment even if your symptoms improve before finishing the medicine. If symptoms persist after seven days, consult your pharmacist or doctor.

Possible Side Effects of Clotrimazole Cream

Like all medicines, Canesten Thrush Internal Cream can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most side effects are mild and temporary, occurring at the site of application. If you experience any concerning symptoms, you should seek advice from our women's health specialists or your healthcare provider.

The most commonly reported side effects include local irritation, burning sensation, or increased itching immediately after application. These symptoms usually subside quickly as your body adjusts to the treatment.

Other possible side effects may include:

  • Vaginal burning or stinging
  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Vaginal irritation or redness
  • Swelling of the vaginal area
  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Skin rash or hives
  • Difficulty urinating

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
