Canesten Thrush Combi Treatment for Complete Relief

You can treat vaginal thrush effectively with this dual-action treatment that combines an internal soft gel pessary with an external cream. The canesten thrush combi provides both internal and external relief from thrush symptoms in one convenient pack. This combination approach targets the infection at its source whilst soothing external irritation and discomfort.

The treatment contains clotrimazole, an antifungal medicine that works by stopping the growth of Candida albicans, the fungus responsible for thrush infections. You get comprehensive coverage for both internal vaginal symptoms and external vulval irritation with this complete treatment solution.

How Clotrimazole Targets Thrush Infections

Clotrimazole belongs to a group of medicines called azole antifungals. It works by interfering with the cell membrane of the Candida fungus, causing it to become leaky and ultimately destroying the fungal cells. This action helps clear the infection and reduces the associated symptoms of itching, burning, and discharge.

The soft gel pessary dissolves inside your vagina to treat the internal infection, whilst the external cream soothes irritated skin around the vulval area. This dual approach ensures you address both the root cause of thrush and its uncomfortable external symptoms simultaneously.

Who Can Use This Thrush Treatment

This treatment is suitable for women aged 16 to 60 years who are experiencing symptoms of vaginal thrush. You should only use this medicine if you have been diagnosed with thrush before by a doctor and recognise the same symptoms returning. For those seeking effective thrush treatments, this combination offers comprehensive relief for recurrent infections.

The treatment is appropriate if you experience:

  • Itching and irritation around the vagina and vulva
  • White, odourless vaginal discharge with a cottage cheese-like consistency
  • Soreness and stinging during urination or intercourse
  • Redness and swelling of the vulval area

Why Choose a Combination Treatment Approach

The combination format offers several advantages over single-component treatments. You get the convenience of treating both internal and external symptoms with one purchase, ensuring comprehensive symptom relief. The pessary provides sustained release of the active ingredient directly where the infection occurs, whilst the cream offers immediate soothing relief for external irritation.

This approach can be particularly beneficial if you experience significant external symptoms alongside the internal infection. The cream component helps restore comfort to sensitive external tissues whilst the pessary works to eliminate the underlying fungal infection.

Storage and Handling Requirements

You should store this medicine below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep the pessary in its original packaging until you are ready to use it, as exposure to heat or moisture can affect its effectiveness. The cream should be kept tightly closed when not in use.

Always check the expiry date before use and do not use the medicine if it has passed this date. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children, and dispose of any unused medicine responsibly through your local pharmacy.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Use the Pessary and Cream

You should insert the soft gel pessary high into your vagina, preferably at bedtime when you are lying down. Remove the pessary from its packaging and insert it using your finger or the applicator provided, pushing it as high as comfortably possible. The pessary will dissolve naturally inside your vagina to release the active ingredient.

Apply the external cream to the affected area around your vulva and vaginal opening. Use a small amount and gently massage it into the irritated skin. You can apply the cream up to twice daily as needed for external symptom relief. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after application to prevent spreading the infection.

Treatment Duration and Timing

The pessary provides a single-dose treatment that works over several days to clear the infection. You should start to notice improvement in your symptoms within a few days of using the pessary. Continue using the external cream as needed for symptom relief until all external irritation has resolved.

If your symptoms have not improved after seven days, or if they worsen during treatment, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist. Do not use this treatment during your menstrual period, as it may be less effective. Wait until your period has finished before starting treatment.

Possible Side Effects of Clotrimazole Treatment

Like all medicines, Canesten Thrush Combi can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most women using this treatment find it well-tolerated, but you should be aware of potential reactions. If you're exploring various women's health treatments , understanding possible side effects helps you make informed decisions about your care.

The most commonly reported side effects include mild burning or stinging sensation when first applying the cream or inserting the pessary. These effects are usually temporary and subside as your body adjusts to the treatment.

Other side effects that may occur include:

  • Increased vaginal burning or irritation
  • Skin rash or redness at the application site
  • Swelling of the vulval area
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Allergic reactions such as hives or difficulty breathing
  • Worsening of thrush symptoms
  • Pain during urination
  • Vaginal bleeding between periods

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
