Canesten Clotrimazole Solution for Fungal Infections

Canesten Solution contains 1% clotrimazole, an antifungal medicine that treats various fungal skin infections. This liquid formulation provides targeted treatment for conditions such as athlete's foot, fungal nail infections, and other skin fungal conditions. The solution format allows for easy application to affected areas and penetrates well into skin folds and between toes where fungal infections commonly occur.

You can use this medicine to treat fungal infections on your skin, but it is specifically labelled as not suitable for ear use. The 20ml bottle provides sufficient treatment for most fungal skin conditions when used as directed.

How Clotrimazole Works Against Fungal Infections

Clotrimazole belongs to a group of medicines called azole antifungals. It works by interfering with the production of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. When ergosterol production is disrupted, the fungal cell membrane becomes damaged and leaky, ultimately leading to the death of the fungus.

The clotrimazole solution penetrates the affected skin area to reach the site of infection. This direct action helps eliminate the fungus causing your symptoms while also preventing the infection from spreading to surrounding healthy skin areas.

Who Can Use This Antifungal Treatment

This medicine is suitable for adults and children over 2 years of age who have fungal skin infections. You can use it to treat various conditions caused by fungi, yeasts, and some bacteria. The solution is particularly useful for treating infections in areas that are difficult to reach with creams or where a liquid application is preferred.

Common conditions this medicine treats include:

  • Athlete's foot (tinea pedis)
  • Fungal nail infections
  • Ringworm of the body (tinea corporis)
  • Fungal infections in skin folds

If you have diabetes or a weakened immune system, you should speak to your pharmacist before using this medicine. You can find more information about athletes foot and fungal infections treatments in our dedicated collection.

Benefits of Solution Format for Fungal Treatment

The liquid solution format offers several advantages over cream formulations for certain types of fungal infections. It spreads easily over large areas and penetrates well into skin creases, between toes, and around nails where fungal infections often develop. The solution dries quickly after application, reducing the risk of transferring the medicine to clothing or bedding.

This formulation is particularly beneficial for treating athlete's foot, as it can reach between toes more effectively than thicker preparations. The solution also allows for more precise application to specific affected areas without waste.

Storage and Handling Requirements

Store this medicine below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use to prevent evaporation and contamination. Do not store in the bathroom where humidity levels are high, as this can affect the medicine's stability.

Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging. Once opened, use within the timeframe specified on the packaging to ensure the medicine remains effective.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Apply Canesten Clotrimazole Solution

Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly before applying the solution. Apply a thin layer of the solution to the infected area and surrounding skin, extending slightly beyond the visible infection. Wash your hands thoroughly after application unless you are treating a hand infection.

Treatment Duration and Frequency

Apply the solution two to three times daily as directed on the packaging or as advised by your pharmacist. Continue treatment for at least one week after symptoms have cleared to prevent the infection from returning. Most skin infections require 2-4 weeks of treatment, but this may vary depending on the type and severity of your infection.

If your symptoms do not improve after 4 weeks of treatment, or if they worsen during treatment, stop using the medicine and consult your doctor or pharmacist. Do not exceed the recommended application frequency as this will not make the treatment more effective and may increase the risk of side effects.
