Canesten Oral Thrush Capsule - Effective Oral Thrush Treatment

You can treat vaginal thrush effectively with this single-dose fluconazole capsule. This medicine contains 150mg of fluconazole, an antifungal ingredient that works systemically to clear thrush infections from within your body.

The capsule provides a convenient alternative to topical creams and pessaries, offering you a discreet treatment option that requires just one dose. You take this medicine by mouth, making it suitable when external treatments are not practical or preferred.

How Fluconazole Works Against Fungal Infections

Fluconazole belongs to a group of medicines called triazole antifungals. It works by interfering with the production of ergosterol, a substance that fungi need to maintain their cell walls. Without ergosterol, the fungal cell walls become damaged and the infection cannot survive.

This mechanism targets the Candida albicans fungus that commonly causes thrush. The medicine circulates through your bloodstream to reach the affected area, providing treatment from within your body rather than just at the surface.

Who Can Use This Antifungal Capsule

This medicine is suitable for women aged 16 to 60 years who have vaginal thrush. You should only use this treatment if you have been diagnosed with thrush before and recognise the symptoms. If you are experiencing thrush symptoms for the first time, you should see your doctor for proper diagnosis.

The capsule is particularly suitable if you:

  • Prefer oral medication to topical treatments
  • Find creams or pessaries inconvenient to use
  • Have recurring thrush that you recognise
  • Need a discreet treatment option

You can find additional treatments for fungal conditions in our athletes foot and fungal infections collection.

Why Choose Single-Dose Treatment

The single-dose format offers you convenience and ensures you complete the full course of treatment. Unlike treatments that require multiple applications over several days, you take this oral thrush treatment just once, reducing the chance of forgetting doses or stopping treatment early.

This approach can be particularly helpful if you have a busy lifestyle or travel frequently. The systemic action means the medicine works throughout your body, potentially preventing the infection from returning to other areas.

Clinical Suitability and Storage Requirements

You should store this medicine below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep the capsule in its original packaging until you are ready to take it, as this protects it from moisture and light.

This treatment is not suitable if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking certain other medicines. You should check with your pharmacist about potential interactions, particularly if you take warfarin, phenytoin, or certain diabetes medicines.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Take Your Fluconazole Capsule

You should take one 150mg capsule by mouth as a single dose. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. You can take this medicine with or without food, as food does not affect how well it works.

Take the capsule as soon as convenient after purchasing, preferably when you first notice thrush symptoms. The medicine will start working within hours, though you may not notice improvement in symptoms for 24 to 48 hours.

When to Expect Results and Follow-Up

Most women find their symptoms improve within one to three days of taking the capsule. If your symptoms have not improved after seven days, or if they return within two months, you should see your doctor as you may need further investigation or different treatment.

You should not take a second dose without consulting your doctor or pharmacist first. If you vomit within one hour of taking the capsule, speak to your pharmacist as you may need to take another dose.
