Voltarol gel for targeted joint pain relief

You can manage joint pain and inflammation with this topical gel containing diclofenac diethylamine. The gel penetrates through your skin to deliver anti-inflammatory action directly to the affected area. This targeted approach means you can treat specific joints without affecting your whole body.

The 12-hour formulation provides extended relief from pain and swelling. You apply the gel directly to clean, dry skin over the painful joint. The non-greasy formula absorbs quickly without leaving residue on your skin or clothes.

How diclofenac gel reduces inflammation

Diclofenac belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). When you apply the gel, the active ingredient passes through your skin and reduces the production of prostaglandins - chemicals that cause pain and inflammation in your joints.

The topical application means lower amounts of the medicine enter your bloodstream compared to oral NSAIDs. This localised action targets the source of your pain whilst minimising systemic exposure. You can explore other pain relief options alongside topical treatments.

Suitable for various joint conditions

This gel helps manage pain and inflammation associated with several musculoskeletal conditions. You can use it for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and soft tissue injuries affecting your joints.

  • Knee and hip osteoarthritis pain
  • Wrist and ankle joint inflammation
  • Sports-related joint injuries
  • Muscle strains around joint areas

Why choose topical over oral treatment

Topical application offers several advantages for joint pain management. You deliver the medicine directly to the affected area, which can provide more targeted relief. The voltarol gel bypasses your digestive system, reducing the risk of stomach irritation that can occur with oral NSAIDs.

The gel format allows precise application to specific joints. You control exactly where the medicine goes, making it ideal for localised pain rather than widespread discomfort.

Storage and handling requirements

Store the gel at room temperature below 25°C and keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Do not freeze the product or expose it to direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Wash your hands thoroughly after applying the gel unless your hands are the treatment area. Avoid contact with your eyes, mouth, and broken skin.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

Application instructions for joint pain relief

Apply a thin layer of gel to the affected joint area and gently massage into your skin until fully absorbed. Use the gel up to three times daily, with at least four hours between applications. The amount you need depends on the size of the area being treated - typically 2-4g covers a hand-sized area.

Clean and dry the skin before application. Do not apply the gel under bandages or dressings unless directed by your healthcare provider. Avoid applying to broken, infected, or inflamed skin.

Duration and frequency of treatment

You can use this gel for up to seven days for acute conditions or longer for chronic joint conditions under medical supervision. If your symptoms do not improve after seven days, or if they worsen, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Do not exceed the recommended dose or frequency of application. Using more gel will not provide better pain relief and may increase the risk of side effects. Allow the gel to dry completely before covering the area with clothing.

Understanding potential side effects

Like all medicines, Voltarol 12 Hour Joint Pain Relief Gel can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most people tolerate topical diclofenac well, with side effects typically being mild and localised to the application site. You can find additional creams and ointments for various skin conditions if you experience local reactions.

The most common side effects occur at the application site and include skin irritation, redness, or itching. These reactions are usually mild and resolve when you stop using the gel.

  • Skin redness or rash at application site
  • Itching or burning sensation
  • Dry skin or peeling
  • Local swelling or inflammation
  • Skin sensitivity or dermatitis
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach upset
  • Allergic reactions including hives
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Eye irritation if accidentally contacted

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
