Viscotears Gel - Long-Lasting Relief for Dry Eyes

You can rely on Viscotears gel to provide extended comfort when your eyes feel dry, gritty, or irritated. This carbomer-based eye lubricant creates a protective layer over your eye surface that lasts longer than traditional eye drops. The gel formulation means fewer applications throughout the day whilst maintaining clear vision.

Each 10g tube contains carbomer 980, which forms a transparent gel when it comes into contact with your tears. This creates a stable tear film that helps restore the natural moisture balance of your eyes. You'll find this particularly helpful if you spend long hours at computer screens or in air-conditioned environments.

How Carbomer Technology Works in Your Eyes

The active ingredient carbomer 980 is a synthetic polymer that transforms into a clear, viscous gel when applied to your eyes. This gel mimics the natural mucin layer of your tear film, which is essential for keeping your eyes properly lubricated. Unlike watery eye drops that drain away quickly, the gel consistency means it stays on your eye surface longer.

When you blink, the gel spreads evenly across your cornea and conjunctiva, creating a smooth optical surface. This helps reduce the friction that causes that uncomfortable scratchy feeling in dry eyes. The gel gradually thins with each blink but maintains its lubricating properties for several hours.

Who Benefits Most from Viscotears Gel

This eye lubricant gel suits you if you experience moderate to severe dry eye symptoms that don't respond well to standard eye drops. You might find it particularly effective if your dry eyes are caused by reduced tear production, poor tear quality, or environmental factors. Many people with eye care needs choose gel formulations for overnight use or when they need longer-lasting relief.

Viscotears gel works well for people who:

  • Experience dry eyes that worsen throughout the day
  • Need less frequent applications than with eye drops
  • Have tried preservative-free drops without sufficient relief
  • Want a gel that won't blur vision once settled

Why Preservative-Free Formulation Matters

Viscotears gel contains no preservatives, which makes it gentler on your eyes, especially with frequent use. Preservatives in eye products can sometimes cause irritation or allergic reactions, particularly if you have sensitive eyes or use the product multiple times daily. The preservative-free formulation reduces the risk of additional irritation whilst you're treating your dry eye symptoms.

This makes the gel suitable for long-term use without the concern of preservative build-up on your eye surface. You can use it as often as needed without worrying about cumulative irritation from chemical preservatives that are found in many multi-dose eye products.

Clinical Suitability and Storage Requirements

You can use Viscotears gel alongside most other eye medications, though you should leave at least 15 minutes between different eye treatments. The gel is suitable for contact lens wearers, but you should remove your lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.

Store your tube at room temperature and use within 28 days of first opening. Keep the cap tightly closed when not in use to maintain sterility. The gel remains stable and effective throughout this period when stored correctly.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Apply Viscotears Gel Correctly

Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the tube. Tilt your head back slightly and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Squeeze a small amount of gel into this pocket, being careful not to touch the tube tip to your eye or eyelid. Release your eyelid and blink gently several times to spread the gel across your eye surface.

Dosage and Frequency Guidelines

Apply one drop of gel to the affected eye or eyes as needed throughout the day. Most people find they need fewer applications compared to standard eye drops due to the longer-lasting formulation. You can use the gel as frequently as required for comfort, including before bedtime if you experience dry eyes overnight. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.

Understanding Potential Side Effects

Like all medicines, Viscotears gel can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. If you do experience side effects from this eye treatment , they are typically mild and temporary.

The most common side effects include temporary blurred vision immediately after application and mild eye irritation. These effects usually resolve within a few minutes as the gel settles on your eye surface.

Known side effects may include:

  • Temporary blurred vision after application
  • Mild stinging or burning sensation
  • Eye irritation or discomfort
  • Increased tear production
  • Feeling of something in the eye
  • Eyelid swelling
  • Redness of the eye or eyelid
  • Itching around the eye area
  • Crusting of eyelashes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Discharge from the eye
  • Allergic reactions in sensitive individuals

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
