Phorpain Ibuprofen Gel 5% for Targeted Pain Relief

You can apply this topical anti-inflammatory gel directly to areas of pain and inflammation. The gel contains 5% ibuprofen, which belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). When you apply it to your skin, the active ingredient penetrates through to the underlying tissues to reduce inflammation and provide localised pain relief.

This 50g tube provides a convenient way to manage muscle aches, joint pain, and sports injuries without taking oral medication. The gel formulation allows for targeted application exactly where you need it most, making it suitable for treating specific areas of discomfort.

How Topical Ibuprofen Works on Your Skin

When you massage the gel into your skin, ibuprofen is absorbed through the skin barrier and reaches the affected tissues beneath. Once there, it works by blocking the production of prostaglandins - chemicals in your body that cause pain, swelling, and inflammation. This targeted approach means you get relief where you need it whilst minimising exposure to the rest of your body.

The gel base helps the ibuprofen penetrate effectively whilst providing a cooling sensation upon application. You'll typically notice the effects within 30 minutes to an hour of application, with peak effectiveness occurring after several hours.

Who Can Benefit from This Anti-Inflammatory Gel

This ibuprofen gel 5% is suitable for adults and children over 14 years who need localised pain relief. You might find it particularly helpful if you prefer topical treatments over oral medications, or if you want to target specific areas without affecting your whole body. Many people choose topical treatments when they're already taking other medications or have stomach sensitivities.

The gel is commonly used for:

  • Muscle strains and sprains from sports or daily activities
  • Joint pain and stiffness in knees, elbows, or wrists
  • Back pain and neck tension
  • Minor injuries and bruising with associated swelling

If you're looking for additional pain relief options, you may want to explore other topical and oral treatments available.

Why Choose Topical Over Oral Pain Relief

Topical ibuprofen offers several advantages over oral forms. You can apply it directly to the affected area, which means higher concentrations reach the site of pain whilst lower amounts enter your bloodstream. This targeted approach reduces the risk of systemic side effects that can occur with oral NSAIDs, particularly stomach irritation.

The gel format also allows you to control exactly how much you use and where you apply it. You can reapply as needed throughout the day, following the recommended dosing intervals, without worrying about exceeding daily oral limits for ibuprofen.

Storage and Handling Requirements

You should store this gel at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use to prevent the gel from drying out. The product should be kept out of reach of children, and you should check the expiry date before each use.

Always wash your hands thoroughly after applying the gel, unless your hands are the area being treated. Avoid contact with your eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes during application.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Apply Ibuprofen Gel Correctly

You should apply a thin layer of gel to the affected area and gently massage it into your skin until fully absorbed. The amount you need will depend on the size of the area being treated, but typically a strip of gel about 2-4cm long is sufficient for an area the size of your hand. You can apply the gel up to 4 times daily, with at least 4 hours between applications.

Before applying, ensure your skin is clean and dry. Remove any clothing or jewellery from the treatment area to allow proper absorption. Apply gentle pressure whilst massaging to help the gel penetrate effectively, but avoid vigorous rubbing which might cause skin irritation.

Important Application Guidelines

You should not apply this gel to broken, damaged, or infected skin, including cuts, grazes, or areas with eczema or dermatitis. Avoid contact with your eyes, mouth, nose, and genital areas. If accidental contact occurs, rinse immediately with plenty of clean water.

Do not cover the treated area with bandages or dressings unless advised by your healthcare provider. You should not use this gel for more than 7 days for muscle pain or 14 days for joint pain without consulting a pharmacist or doctor. If your symptoms worsen or do not improve within these timeframes, seek medical advice.

Understanding Potential Side Effects

Like all medicines, Phorpain Ibuprofen 5% Gel can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most people tolerate topical ibuprofen well, with side effects being generally milder than those associated with oral NSAIDs. If you're exploring creams and ointments for pain relief, it's important to understand how different formulations may affect you.

The most common side effects are skin reactions at the application site, which typically appear as redness, itching, or mild irritation. These reactions are usually temporary and resolve once you stop using the product.

Possible side effects you might experience include:

  • Skin redness or rash at the application site
  • Itching or burning sensation where applied
  • Dry or flaky skin in the treated area
  • Mild skin irritation or sensitivity
  • Contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals
  • Photosensitivity reactions when exposed to sunlight
  • Allergic reactions including hives or swelling
  • Worsening of asthma symptoms in susceptible people
  • Headache (rare with topical application)
  • Nausea (uncommon with topical use)
  • Dizziness (very rare)
  • Stomach upset (much less common than with oral ibuprofen)

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
