Optrex Hayfever Relief 2% w/v Eye Drops - Effective Hayfever Eye Drops for Seasonal Allergies

You can find relief from itchy, watery eyes caused by hayfever and seasonal allergies with these sodium cromoglicate eye drops. Each 10ml bottle contains 2% w/v sodium cromoglicate, a clinically proven antihistamine that works directly at the source of your allergic reaction in the eyes.

These preservative-free eye drops provide targeted treatment for allergic conjunctivitis symptoms without the systemic effects of oral antihistamines. You can use them throughout the hayfever season to manage your symptoms and maintain clear, comfortable vision during peak pollen periods.

How Sodium Cromoglicate Works Against Eye Allergies

Sodium cromoglicate prevents the release of histamine and other inflammatory substances from mast cells in your eye tissues. When pollen or other allergens come into contact with your eyes, these cells would normally trigger the allergic response that causes itching, redness, and excessive tearing.

By stabilising these mast cells, the active ingredient blocks the allergic cascade before symptoms develop. This preventative action makes these drops particularly effective when used regularly during hayfever season, rather than waiting until symptoms become severe.

Who Should Use These Allergy Eye Drops

These drops are suitable for adults and children over 6 years who experience seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. You may benefit from this treatment if you regularly suffer from eye symptoms during spring and summer months when tree, grass, and weed pollens are at their highest levels.

The drops are particularly helpful for people who experience:

  • Itchy, irritated eyes during hayfever season
  • Excessive watering and tearing from pollen exposure
  • Red, inflamed conjunctiva due to airborne allergens
  • Discomfort when spending time outdoors during high pollen days

If you need comprehensive allergy management, you can explore our full range of allergy and hayfever treatments to find additional options that work alongside these eye drops.

Why Choose Preservative-Free Formulation

This preservative-free formulation reduces the risk of additional eye irritation that can occur with preserved eye drops, especially during frequent use throughout hayfever season. The absence of preservatives makes these hayfever eye drops suitable for people with sensitive eyes or those who wear contact lenses.

The single-dose vials ensure sterility while eliminating preservative-related side effects such as stinging, burning, or paradoxical worsening of eye irritation that some people experience with multi-dose preserved products.

Clinical Suitability and Storage Requirements

These eye drops are clinically suitable for long-term use throughout the hayfever season, typically from March through September in the UK. You can use them prophylactically before pollen exposure or therapeutically when symptoms develop.

Store the unopened vials at room temperature below 25°C and protect from light. Once opened, each single-dose vial should be used immediately and discarded after use. Do not store opened vials for later use as the preservative-free formulation cannot prevent bacterial contamination once the seal is broken.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

Recommended Dosage for Hayfever Eye Relief

Apply one to two drops into each affected eye up to four times daily, or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. You can increase the frequency during periods of high pollen exposure or when symptoms are more severe. For preventative use, begin treatment before the hayfever season starts and continue throughout the period when you typically experience symptoms.

Proper Application Technique

Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the eye drops. Tilt your head back slightly and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Squeeze the recommended number of drops into this pocket, taking care not to touch the dropper tip to your eye or eyelid. Close your eye gently and press lightly on the inner corner for about one minute to prevent the drops from draining away too quickly. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
