Opticrom Allergy Eye Drops for Seasonal Eye Allergies

What Are Opticrom Eye Drops Used For?

Opticrom eye drops contain sodium cromoglicate, a mast cell stabiliser that helps prevent allergic reactions in your eyes. You can use these drops to treat and prevent symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis, commonly known as hay fever affecting the eyes. The active ingredient works by stopping the release of histamine and other inflammatory substances that cause your eye allergy symptoms.

These drops are particularly effective when you start using them before your allergy season begins. They help reduce the typical symptoms of eye allergies including itching, redness, watering, and swelling of the eyelids. You may find relief from both indoor and outdoor allergens such as pollen, dust mites, and pet dander.

How Do Sodium Cromoglicate Eye Drops Work?

Sodium cromoglicate belongs to a group of medicines called mast cell stabilisers. When allergens enter your eyes, they normally trigger mast cells to release histamine and other chemicals that cause inflammation and discomfort. This medication prevents this release from happening, which stops the allergic reaction before it starts.

The drops work best when you use them regularly, even when you don't have symptoms. This preventative approach helps maintain a protective barrier in your eyes against allergens. For those seeking comprehensive allergy eye drops treatment, you may also want to explore our allergy and hay fever collection for additional relief options.

Who Can Use These Eye Drops?

Adults and children over 4 years old can use Opticrom eye drops. However, children should only use them under adult supervision. You should not use these drops if you are allergic to sodium cromoglicate or any other ingredients in the formulation.

Before using these drops, inform your pharmacist if you:

  • Wear contact lenses
  • Have any other eye conditions
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are taking other eye medications

Storage and Handling Instructions

Store your eye drops at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use and do not share your eye drops with others. Once opened, you should use the drops within 28 days and then dispose of any remaining solution safely.

Always wash your hands before using the drops and avoid touching the dropper tip to prevent contamination. If the solution changes colour or becomes cloudy, do not use it and consult your pharmacist for a replacement.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

Recommended Dosage for Adults and Children

The usual dose is one to two drops in each affected eye, four times daily. You should space the doses evenly throughout the day for optimal effectiveness. For prevention of seasonal allergies, start using the drops 2-4 weeks before your usual allergy season begins.

Children over 4 years should use the same dosage as adults, but always under adult supervision. If you forget a dose, apply it as soon as you remember, unless it's nearly time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.

How to Apply Eye Drops Correctly

Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the bottle. Tilt your head back slightly and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the bottle above your eye and squeeze gently to release one drop into the pocket. Close your eye for a few moments to allow the drop to spread across the surface.

If you need to apply drops to both eyes, repeat the process for the other eye. Avoid blinking excessively immediately after application. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
