Opticrom Allergy Eye Drops for Seasonal Relief

How Sodium Cromoglicate Treats Eye Allergies

Opticrom contains sodium cromoglicate, a mast cell stabiliser that prevents the release of histamine and other inflammatory substances in your eyes. When you encounter allergens like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander, your immune system normally triggers these substances, causing the uncomfortable symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis.

This medicine works by blocking this allergic response before it starts, rather than just treating symptoms after they occur. You can use these allergy eye drops to manage seasonal hay fever symptoms or year-round allergic reactions affecting your eyes. The active ingredient has been clinically studied for treating allergic conjunctivitis and is suitable for long-term use when needed.

What Conditions Does Opticrom Treat?

These eye drops are specifically formulated to treat allergic conjunctivitis, which occurs when your eyes react to airborne allergens. You may experience this condition seasonally during high pollen periods or throughout the year if you're sensitive to indoor allergens.

The drops are effective for managing symptoms caused by various triggers including tree pollen, grass pollen, house dust mites, and animal dander. Many people find relief when using Opticrom as part of their broader allergy and hay fever management routine alongside other treatments.

Key Benefits of Sodium Cromoglicate Treatment

Sodium cromoglicate offers several advantages for managing eye allergies:

  • Prevents allergic reactions rather than just treating existing symptoms
  • Suitable for regular use during allergy seasons
  • Can be used alongside other hay fever medications
  • Generally well-tolerated with minimal side effects

The preventative action means you can apply the drops before exposure to known allergens, helping you maintain clearer, more comfortable eyes during challenging periods.

Who Can Use These Eye Drops

Opticrom is suitable for adults and children over 4 years of age who experience allergic conjunctivitis. The drops can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, though you should consult your pharmacist or doctor first if you're pregnant or nursing.

If you wear contact lenses, you'll need to remove them before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. This prevents the preservatives in the drops from being absorbed by your lenses.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

Proper Application Technique for Opticrom

Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the eye drops. Tilt your head back slightly and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the bottle above your eye without touching the dropper tip to your eye or eyelid, then squeeze gently to release one drop into the pocket you've created.

Close your eye gently and press lightly on the inner corner near your nose for about one minute. This prevents the medicine from draining away too quickly. Repeat the process for your other eye if both eyes require treatment.

Recommended Dosage Schedule

The typical dosage is one drop in each affected eye four times daily. For optimal results, try to space your doses evenly throughout the day. You may need to use the drops for several days before experiencing the full benefit, as sodium cromoglicate works by building up protective levels in your eye tissues.

Continue using the drops regularly throughout your allergy season or as long as you're exposed to triggering allergens. If your symptoms don't improve after one week of regular use, consult your pharmacist or doctor for further advice.

Known side effects may include:

  • Temporary stinging or burning sensation upon application
  • Mild eye irritation or redness
  • Temporary blurred vision immediately after use
  • Watery eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Eyelid swelling
  • Sensitivity to light

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
