Nurofen Joint & Muscular Pain Relief Medicated Plasters for Joint Pain

These ibuprofen-containing plasters provide targeted relief for joint and muscle discomfort through direct application to the affected area. Each plaster delivers the active ingredient through your skin to the site of pain, offering localised treatment without the need for oral medication.

The adhesive format allows the medication to work continuously whilst you go about your daily activities. You can wear each plaster for up to 24 hours, providing sustained relief throughout the day and night.

How Ibuprofen Plasters Work on Painful Areas

The active ingredient ibuprofen belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). When applied topically through the plaster, ibuprofen reduces inflammation and blocks pain signals at the source of discomfort.

This targeted approach means the medication concentrates where you need it most, whilst minimising exposure to other parts of your body. The transdermal delivery system ensures steady absorption through your skin over the wearing period.

Who Can Benefit from These Pain Relief Plasters

These plasters suit adults and children over 12 years who experience joint or muscle pain from various causes. They work particularly well for localised discomfort that affects specific areas rather than widespread pain.

The plasters are suitable for:

  • Joint stiffness and discomfort in knees, elbows, or wrists
  • Muscle strain from physical activity or exercise
  • Back pain affecting specific areas
  • Sports-related injuries requiring targeted treatment

If you prefer topical treatments over oral medications, or need medicated plasters for joint pain that won't interfere with other medicines you're taking, these plasters offer a practical solution. You'll find them particularly useful when you need pain relief whilst maintaining full mobility.

Why Choose Topical Pain Relief Over Oral Options

Topical application reduces the risk of stomach irritation that can occur with oral NSAIDs. The medication goes directly to the painful area rather than circulating throughout your entire system, which means lower systemic exposure.

This targeted approach makes the plasters suitable for people who experience stomach sensitivity with oral pain relievers. You can also use them alongside other treatments for pain relief as part of a comprehensive management approach.

Storage and Handling Requirements

Store the plasters in their original packaging at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep them out of reach of children and check the expiry date before use.

Each plaster should remain sealed until you're ready to apply it. Once opened, use the plaster immediately for optimal adhesion and effectiveness.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Apply Your Ibuprofen Plaster Correctly

Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly before application. Remove the protective backing from the plaster and apply it directly to the skin over the painful joint or muscle. Press down firmly around the edges to ensure good contact with your skin.

Apply only one plaster at a time to the affected area. Do not cut or divide the plaster as this may affect how the medication is released. Avoid applying plasters to broken, damaged, or irritated skin.

Duration of Use and Removal Instructions

Wear each plaster for up to 24 hours, then remove it carefully by peeling from one corner. You may apply a new plaster to the same area if needed, but allow your skin to breathe between applications when possible.

Do not use more than one plaster on the same area at the same time. If you need to treat multiple areas, space the plasters apart and do not exceed the recommended number of plasters per day as stated in the patient information leaflet.

Potential Side Effects of Topical Ibuprofen Treatment

Like all medicines, Nurofen Joint & Muscular Pain Relief Medicated Plasters can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most people tolerate topical ibuprofen well, but you should be aware of possible reactions, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergies to NSAIDs. If you experience any concerning symptoms, you can find additional support through our creams and ointments collection for alternative topical treatments.

The most common side effects involve skin reactions at the application site. These typically appear as redness, itching, or mild irritation where you've applied the plaster. Most skin reactions are mild and resolve once you remove the plaster.

Possible side effects may include:

  • Skin redness or rash at the application site
  • Itching or burning sensation under the plaster
  • Dry or flaky skin where the plaster was applied
  • Mild swelling around the treated area
  • Skin discolouration that fades after removal
  • Allergic contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals
  • Blistering or severe skin irritation (rare)
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight in the treated area
  • Headache or dizziness (uncommon with topical use)
  • Nausea (rare with topical application)
  • Breathing difficulties (seek immediate medical help)
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face or throat

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
