Nurofen For Children Orange Flavour - Children's Ibuprofen Suspension

Nurofen For Children Orange Flavour provides effective relief from pain and fever in children aged 3 months to 12 years. This oral suspension contains ibuprofen 100mg per 5ml dose, formulated specifically for young patients who cannot swallow tablets or capsules.

The orange-flavoured liquid makes administration easier for parents and more acceptable for children. Each bottle contains a measured dosing syringe to ensure accurate dosing based on your child's age and weight. This medicine belongs to a group called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

How Ibuprofen Works in Children

Ibuprofen reduces pain, inflammation and fever by blocking the production of prostaglandins - natural substances in the body that cause these symptoms. When your child has an infection, injury or illness, prostaglandins are released at the site of inflammation, causing pain and raising body temperature.

By inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX), ibuprofen prevents prostaglandin formation, thereby reducing your child's discomfort and bringing down their temperature. The effects typically begin within 30 minutes of administration and can last up to 8 hours, providing sustained relief throughout the day or night.

Suitable Conditions for Young Patients

This children's ibuprofen suspension effectively treats various common childhood ailments that cause pain and fever. It provides relief when your child is unwell and needs comfort to rest and recover properly.

The medicine is particularly useful for managing symptoms associated with:

  • Teething pain in infants and toddlers
  • Fever accompanying cold, flu or other infections
  • Headaches and general aches and pains
  • Post-immunisation fever and discomfort

You can find additional pain relief options for the whole family in our comprehensive range of medicines.

Sugar-Free Formulation Benefits

This formulation is sugar-free, making it suitable for children who need to avoid sugar in their diet or those at risk of dental problems. The absence of sugar also means the medicine won't contribute to tooth decay, which is particularly important for young children whose teeth are still developing.

The sugar-free formula uses artificial sweeteners to maintain palatability whilst protecting your child's dental health. This consideration is especially valuable for children who may need regular medication or those with diabetes or other conditions requiring sugar restriction.

Storage and Shelf Life Considerations

Store this medicine below 25°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Do not refrigerate as this may affect the consistency of the suspension. Always check the expiry date before use and dispose of any remaining medicine after this date.

Once opened, use within 6 months or by the expiry date, whichever comes first. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use to maintain the medicine's effectiveness and prevent contamination.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

Dosage Instructions for Children

Always use the measuring syringe provided to ensure accurate dosing. The dose depends on your child's age and weight, not their symptoms. Give the medicine every 6-8 hours as needed, but do not exceed the maximum daily dose or give more than 3 doses in 24 hours.

For children aged 3-6 months weighing over 5kg, the usual dose is 2.5ml. Children aged 6 months to 1 year typically receive 2.5ml, whilst those aged 1-4 years usually take 5ml per dose. Children aged 4-7 years normally receive 7.5ml, and those aged 7-12 years typically take 10ml per dose.

Administration Guidelines

Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure the medicine is properly mixed. Draw up the correct amount using the oral syringe and administer directly into your child's mouth, aiming towards the inside of the cheek rather than the back of the throat.

You can give this medicine with or without food, though giving it with food may help reduce the risk of stomach upset in sensitive children. If your child vomits within 30 minutes of taking the dose, you may give the same dose again. Do not exceed the recommended dose even if symptoms persist, and consult your pharmacist or doctor if fever continues for more than 3 days.
