Maloff Protect 250mg/100mg Malaria Tablets

Maloff Protect contains atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride, two active ingredients that work together to prevent malaria infection. This combination medication is prescribed for travellers visiting areas where malaria is present, providing protection against the parasites that cause this serious tropical disease.

Each tablet contains 250mg atovaquone and 100mg proguanil hydrochloride. The medication is taken daily, starting before travel and continuing during your stay in malaria-endemic areas and for a period after your return.

How Maloff Protect Works Against Malaria

The two active ingredients in Maloff Protect target different stages of the malaria parasite's life cycle. Atovaquone disrupts the parasite's ability to produce energy, whilst proguanil interferes with the parasite's DNA synthesis and cell division processes.

This dual mechanism of action makes malaria tablets like Maloff Protect effective against multiple species of malaria parasites, including Plasmodium falciparum, which causes the most severe form of malaria. The combination approach helps prevent the development of drug resistance.

Who Should Consider Maloff Protect

This antimalarial medication is suitable for adults and children weighing over 40kg who are travelling to malaria-endemic regions. Your doctor will assess your travel destination, duration of stay, and individual health factors to determine if this medication is appropriate for you.

Maloff Protect may be recommended for travellers visiting areas with:

  • Chloroquine-resistant malaria strains
  • High transmission rates of malaria
  • Multiple malaria species present
  • Limited healthcare facilities available

Before prescribing, your healthcare provider will consider your medical history, current medications, and any previous reactions to antimalarial drugs. If you're planning travel health preparations, discuss your itinerary with a healthcare professional well in advance.

Why Choose This Combination Treatment

The atovaquone and proguanil combination offers several advantages for malaria prevention. It has a relatively short course requirement after leaving malaria areas compared to some other antimalarial medications, and it's generally well-tolerated by most people.

This medication can be taken with food, which may help reduce potential stomach upset. The daily dosing schedule is straightforward, making it easier to maintain consistent protection throughout your travel period.

Storage and Handling Requirements

Store Maloff Protect tablets in their original packaging at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep the medication out of reach of children and do not use tablets that are damaged or past their expiry date.

Always carry your antimalarial medication in your hand luggage when travelling, ensuring you have enough tablets for your entire trip plus a few extra days in case of travel delays.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Take Maloff Protect Tablets

Take one tablet daily with food or a milky drink at the same time each day. Start taking the tablets 1-2 days before entering the malaria area, continue throughout your stay, and for 7 days after leaving the malaria-endemic region. Swallow the tablet whole with water - do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.

If you vomit within one hour of taking a dose, take another tablet. If vomiting occurs more than one hour after taking the dose, do not take an additional tablet until your next scheduled dose. Set a daily reminder to help maintain consistent timing, as missing doses can reduce the medication's effectiveness.

Important Administration Guidelines

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, then continue with your regular schedule the following day. Do not take two tablets on the same day to make up for a missed dose. Continue taking the medication for the full prescribed duration, even if you feel well, as malaria parasites can remain dormant in your system.

Consult your doctor if you experience persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, as this may affect the absorption of the medication and require additional protective measures. Always complete the full course as prescribed, including the days after leaving the malaria area.
