Dioralyte Relief Oral Rehydration Therapy - Blackcurrant - 6 Sachets

You can restore your body's fluid and electrolyte balance with this blackcurrant-flavoured rehydration solution. Each sachet contains glucose and essential salts that help your body absorb water more effectively than plain water alone. This makes it particularly useful when you're experiencing fluid loss from diarrhoea, vomiting, or excessive sweating.

The blackcurrant flavour makes the solution more palatable, which can be important when you're feeling unwell. You simply dissolve one sachet in fresh drinking water to create a solution that meets World Health Organization recommendations for oral rehydration therapy.

How Electrolyte Replacement Works in Your Body

When you lose fluids through illness or sweating, you don't just lose water - you also lose important electrolytes like sodium and potassium. These minerals are essential for proper muscle function, nerve transmission, and maintaining the right fluid balance in your cells.

The glucose in this solution helps your intestines absorb sodium more efficiently through a process called co-transport. This means your body can rehydrate faster and more effectively than with water alone. The carefully balanced formula helps restore normal hydration levels whilst replacing lost electrolytes. For additional digestive support, you might also consider our diarrhoea treatments if you're experiencing ongoing symptoms.

Who Should Use Dehydration Sachets

This rehydration therapy is suitable for adults and children over 3 months old who are experiencing mild to moderate dehydration. You might find it helpful if you're recovering from gastroenteritis, food poisoning, or have been vomiting or experiencing diarrhoea.

The solution is also useful for rehydration after:

  • Prolonged exercise or physical activity in hot weather
  • Travel-related stomach upsets
  • Recovery from fever when you've been sweating excessively
  • Any situation where you've lost significant fluids and feel dehydrated

Why Choose Blackcurrant Flavoured Rehydration

The blackcurrant flavouring helps mask the naturally salty taste of electrolyte solutions, making it easier for you to drink the full amount needed for proper rehydration. This is particularly important when you're feeling nauseous or unwell, as the pleasant taste can help prevent further vomiting.

Unlike some rehydration products, this formulation doesn't contain artificial colours or unnecessary additives. The focus remains on providing the essential components your body needs to restore proper hydration and electrolyte balance efficiently.

Clinical Suitability and Storage Requirements

You should store the sachets in a cool, dry place below 25°C and use them before the expiry date printed on the packaging. Once you've mixed a sachet with water, you should drink the solution within one hour if kept at room temperature, or within 24 hours if refrigerated.

This product is suitable for most people, but you should consult your pharmacist or doctor before use if you have kidney problems, diabetes, or are on a controlled sodium diet. The solution is gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

How to Prepare Your Rehydration Solution

You should dissolve the contents of one sachet in 200ml of fresh drinking water. Stir the mixture until the powder is completely dissolved before drinking. The water should be at room temperature or slightly cool - avoid using hot water as this can affect the solution's effectiveness.

Make sure you use the exact amount of water specified, as using too little water will make the solution too concentrated, whilst too much water will dilute the essential electrolytes your body needs.

Recommended Dosage for Different Age Groups

For adults and children over 12 years, you can take one to two sachets after each loose bowel movement, up to a maximum of five sachets in 24 hours. Children aged 1-12 years should take one sachet after each episode of diarrhoea, with a maximum of five sachets per day.

For infants aged 3 months to 1 year, give one sachet per day unless your doctor advises otherwise. You should always consult your pharmacist or doctor before giving this product to young children. Continue taking the solution until your diarrhoea stops, but don't exceed the recommended daily limits.

Understanding Potential Side Effects

Like all medicines, Dioralyte Relief can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most people tolerate this rehydration solution well, especially when it's prepared and used correctly according to the instructions. If you're managing multiple health conditions, our vitamins and supplements section offers additional support options you might find helpful.

The most commonly reported side effects are usually mild and related to the taste or your body adjusting to the electrolyte replacement. These typically resolve quickly as your body rehydrates and recovers.

Possible side effects may include:

  • Nausea or feeling sick
  • Vomiting, particularly if drunk too quickly
  • Mild stomach discomfort or bloating
  • Temporary changes in bowel movements
  • Mild headache as your body rehydrates
  • Slight dizziness when standing up
  • Metallic or salty aftertaste
  • Increased thirst initially
  • Mild fatigue as electrolyte balance restores
  • Temporary loss of appetite

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
