Calpol Sixplus FastMelts Strawberry for Children's Pain Relief

You can provide your child with effective pain and fever relief using these strawberry-flavoured tablets that dissolve quickly on the tongue. Each tablet contains paracetamol, a well-established medicine for reducing pain and fever in children aged 6 years and over. The fast-dissolving formulation means you don't need water, making it easier to give medicine to children who struggle with traditional tablets or liquid medicines.

These tablets are specifically formulated for children and provide a convenient alternative to liquid paracetamol. The strawberry flavour helps make the medicine more acceptable to children, whilst the calpol fastmelts format dissolves within seconds of being placed on the tongue.

How Paracetamol Works to Reduce Pain and Fever

Paracetamol works by blocking the production of prostaglandins in your child's brain and spinal cord. Prostaglandins are chemicals that cause pain and inflammation, and also affect the part of the brain that controls body temperature. By reducing prostaglandin production, paracetamol helps lower fever and provides relief from mild to moderate pain.

The medicine is absorbed into your child's bloodstream through the mouth and stomach, typically beginning to work within 30 minutes to 1 hour. The effects usually last for 4 to 6 hours, which is why doses are typically spaced throughout the day when needed.

Suitable for Children with Various Pain and Fever Conditions

You can use these tablets to help manage your child's discomfort from various common conditions. They are particularly useful when your child has difficulty taking liquid medicines or when you need a portable option for pain relief whilst out and about.

The tablets are suitable for treating:

  • Headaches and general aches and pains
  • Fever associated with colds and flu
  • Toothache and teething discomfort
  • Post-vaccination fever and soreness

Why Fast-Dissolving Tablets Benefit Children

The fast-melting formulation offers several practical advantages for both you and your child. Unlike traditional tablets that need to be swallowed whole, these dissolve quickly on the tongue without requiring water. This makes them particularly useful when you're travelling or when your child is reluctant to take medicine.

The strawberry flavour helps mask the medicinal taste that children often find unpleasant. The tablets also provide a more precise dose compared to liquid medicines, where measuring can sometimes be challenging, especially in low-light conditions or when your child is unwell and restless.

Storage and Shelf Life Considerations

You should store these tablets in their original packaging in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Keep them out of reach and sight of children when not in use. The blister pack helps protect the tablets from moisture, which is important for maintaining their fast-dissolving properties.

Check the expiry date before giving the medicine to your child, and do not use tablets that appear damaged or have been exposed to excessive heat or moisture. The compact packaging makes them convenient to carry in your bag or first aid kit.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

Recommended Dosage for Children Aged 6 Years and Over

You should give your child the appropriate dose based on their age, following the instructions on the packaging carefully. For children aged 6 to 8 years, the typical dose is half a tablet. Children aged 8 to 10 years usually require half to one tablet, whilst children aged 10 to 12 years typically need one tablet. Children over 12 years can take one to two tablets as needed.

You should not exceed the maximum daily dose or give doses more frequently than every 4 hours. Always check the packaging for the most current dosage information, as recommendations may vary. If you are unsure about the correct dose for your child's age or weight, consult your pharmacist or doctor before giving the medicine.

How to Administer FastMelt Tablets Correctly

You should place the tablet directly on your child's tongue and allow it to dissolve completely. The tablet will typically dissolve within 30 seconds without the need for water, though your child can drink water afterwards if they wish. Ensure your child does not chew or swallow the tablet whole, as this may affect how quickly the medicine works.

You can give the tablets with or without food, though giving them with food may help if your child has a sensitive stomach. If your child's symptoms persist for more than 3 days, or if they develop new symptoms, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist for further advice.

Understanding Potential Side Effects of Paracetamol

Like all medicines, Calpol Sixplus FastMelts Strawberry can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. When you give paracetamol to your child as directed, serious side effects are uncommon, but it's important to be aware of what to watch for. Most children tolerate paracetamol well, and many families use products from our baby and toddler range without experiencing any adverse effects.

The most commonly reported side effects are generally mild and may include skin reactions or digestive upset. These typically resolve on their own once the medicine is stopped.

Possible side effects may include:

  • Skin rash or redness
  • Nausea or stomach upset
  • Allergic reactions such as swelling of face, lips, or throat
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes
  • Dark urine or pale stools
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Blood disorders affecting white blood cells
  • Liver problems with prolonged use or overdose

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
