Calpol SixPlus Fastmelts - Fast-Dissolving Paracetamol Relief

These fast-dissolving tablets provide convenient paracetamol relief for children aged 6 years and over. Each tablet dissolves quickly on the tongue without water, making them ideal for children who struggle with traditional tablets or liquid medicines. The strawberry-flavoured tablets contain 250mg of paracetamol per tablet.

The calpol sixplus fastmelts format offers parents a practical solution when treating fever and pain in older children. The tablets are designed to disintegrate rapidly in the mouth, allowing for quick absorption and relief from symptoms associated with colds, flu, teething, and minor injuries.

How Paracetamol Works in Children

Paracetamol works by blocking the production of prostaglandins in the brain, which are chemicals that cause pain and fever. This action helps reduce your child's temperature and provides relief from discomfort. The medicine is absorbed into the bloodstream and begins working within 30 minutes of administration.

Unlike some other pain relievers, paracetamol is gentle on the stomach and suitable for children when used as directed. The fast-dissolving format ensures the medicine reaches the bloodstream quickly, providing prompt relief when your child needs it most.

Suitable for School-Age Children and Teenagers

These tablets are specifically formulated for children aged 6 years and over who can safely dissolve tablets in their mouth. They're particularly useful for older children who may refuse liquid medicines or find swallowing traditional tablets difficult. The convenient format makes them suitable for use at school or when travelling.

  • Suitable for children aged 6-12 years and teenagers aged 12-18 years
  • No water required for administration
  • Pleasant strawberry flavour improves acceptance
  • Convenient for use away from home

Parents often find these tablets helpful when managing fever and pain associated with common childhood illnesses. For younger children or additional baby and toddler pain relief options, alternative formulations may be more appropriate.

Sugar-Free Formulation Benefits

The sugar-free formulation helps protect your child's dental health whilst providing effective pain and fever relief. This makes them suitable for regular use when managing ongoing conditions or during illness recovery periods. The absence of sugar also makes them appropriate for children following restricted diets.

The tablets contain aspartame as a sweetener, which provides the pleasant taste without contributing to tooth decay. This consideration is particularly important for children who may require frequent doses during illness or for managing chronic pain conditions.

Storage and Shelf Life Considerations

Store these tablets in a cool, dry place below 25°C and keep them in the original packaging to protect from moisture. The blister pack design helps maintain tablet integrity and prevents premature dissolution. Always check the expiry date before use and dispose of any expired medicines safely at your local pharmacy.

Keep all medicines out of sight and reach of children. The child-resistant packaging provides additional safety, but proper storage remains essential for maintaining both safety and efficacy of the medicine.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

Recommended Dosage for Different Age Groups

For children aged 6-8 years, give one tablet every 4-6 hours as needed, with a maximum of 4 tablets in 24 hours. Children aged 9-10 years can take one tablet every 4-6 hours, with a maximum of 5 tablets in 24 hours. For children aged 11-12 years, give one tablet every 4-6 hours with a maximum of 6 tablets in 24 hours.

Teenagers aged 12-15 years can take 1-2 tablets every 4-6 hours as needed, not exceeding 8 tablets in 24 hours. Those aged 16-18 years may take 1-2 tablets every 4-6 hours, with a maximum of 8 tablets in 24 hours. Always leave at least 4 hours between doses and do not exceed the stated dose.

How to Administer Fastmelt Tablets

Place the tablet on your child's tongue and allow it to dissolve completely without chewing or swallowing whole. The tablet will disintegrate within 1-2 minutes, releasing the strawberry flavour. No water is required, though your child may drink afterwards if they wish.

Ensure your child remains still whilst the tablet dissolves to prevent choking. If your child has difficulty keeping the tablet on their tongue, you may break it into smaller pieces, though this should dissolve just as quickly. Do not give to children under 6 years of age.

Understanding Potential Side Effects

Like all medicines, Calpol SixPlus Fastmelts can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. When managing your child's symptoms, it's important to be aware of both common and serious reactions that may occur, and to seek appropriate pain relief alternatives if needed.

Most children tolerate paracetamol well when used as directed. The most commonly reported side effects are generally mild and resolve without treatment. Serious side effects are rare but require immediate medical attention.

Possible side effects may include:

  • Nausea or stomach discomfort
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes
  • Dark urine or pale stools
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Blood in vomit or stools
  • Extreme tiredness or weakness
  • Loss of appetite lasting more than a day
  • Headache that worsens with continued use

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
