Calpol Infant Suspension Sugar Free 200ml for Baby Fever Relief

You can trust this calpol infant suspension to provide gentle relief from fever and pain in babies and young children from 2 months old. This sugar-free formulation contains paracetamol as the active ingredient, offering the same effective relief as the original formula without added sugars. The 200ml bottle provides multiple doses with the included measuring syringe for accurate dosing.

This infant paracetamol suspension has been specially developed for babies and toddlers, with a pleasant strawberry flavour that makes administration easier for parents and more acceptable for children. The liquid format ensures quick absorption and faster relief compared to solid dosage forms.

How Paracetamol Works to Reduce Fever and Pain

Paracetamol works by blocking the production of prostaglandins in the brain, which are chemicals that cause pain and fever. When your child has a fever, their body temperature rises as part of the immune response to infection. This medicine helps to lower their temperature back to normal levels whilst also providing pain relief.

The suspension format allows for rapid absorption through the digestive system, typically beginning to work within 30 minutes of administration. The effects can last for up to 4-6 hours, providing sustained relief from discomfort.

Suitable for Infants and Young Children

This baby fever medicine is specifically formulated for children aged 2 months to 6 years, making it an essential item for your medicine cabinet. The sugar-free formulation makes it suitable for children who need to avoid added sugars, including those with diabetes or dental concerns.

The medicine is appropriate for treating various childhood conditions including:

  • Fever associated with colds and flu
  • Post-vaccination fever and discomfort
  • Teething pain and irritability
  • General aches and pains from minor illnesses

You can find additional support for childhood ailments in our comprehensive baby and toddler collection, which includes other essential medicines and healthcare products for young children.

Benefits of Sugar-Free Formulation

The sugar-free formula provides the same effective relief as traditional formulations whilst being gentler on developing teeth. This makes it particularly suitable for regular use during teething periods or recurring childhood illnesses. The absence of added sugars also means it's appropriate for children following special diets or those with specific dietary requirements.

Parents can feel confident giving this medicine without concerns about contributing to tooth decay or providing unnecessary sugars to their child's diet. The pleasant strawberry flavour is achieved through artificial sweeteners that are safe for children.

Storage and Shelf Life Considerations

You should store this suspension at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children. Once opened, the medicine remains effective for the duration stated on the packaging, typically 3 years from manufacture date. Always check the expiry date before use and dispose of any expired medicine safely at your local pharmacy.

The included measuring syringe should be cleaned after each use and stored with the bottle. This ensures accurate dosing and maintains hygiene standards for your child's safety.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

Correct Dosage for Different Age Groups

You should always use the measuring syringe provided to ensure accurate dosing. For infants aged 2-3 months, give 2.5ml up to twice daily, but only on medical advice. Children aged 3-6 months can receive 2.5ml up to 3 times daily, whilst those aged 6-24 months can have 5ml up to 4 times daily. Children aged 2-4 years may receive 7.5ml up to 4 times daily, and those aged 4-6 years can have 10ml up to 4 times daily.

Always leave at least 4 hours between doses and do not exceed the stated dose. If your child's symptoms persist for more than 3 days, or if they develop new symptoms, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist for further advice.

Administration Instructions and Tips

You can give this medicine with or without food, though giving it with milk or after feeding may help reduce any potential stomach upset. Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure the medicine is properly mixed. Draw up the correct amount using the measuring syringe and administer directly into your child's mouth, aiming towards the inside of their cheek rather than the back of their throat.

If your child spits out the medicine immediately after administration, you may give the dose again. However, if they keep it down for more than a few minutes before vomiting, do not repeat the dose as some absorption will have occurred.

Understanding Potential Side Effects

Like all medicines, Calpol Infant Suspension can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most children tolerate paracetamol very well, and serious side effects are rare when the medicine is used correctly. If you're managing multiple symptoms, you might also consider browsing our cold and flu collection for additional supportive treatments.

The most commonly reported side effects include mild stomach upset and occasional skin reactions. These typically resolve quickly and rarely require discontinuation of the medicine.

Possible side effects may include:

  • Nausea or stomach discomfort
  • Skin rash or redness
  • Allergic reactions such as swelling of face or throat
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes
  • Dark urine or pale stools
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Loss of appetite lasting more than a day
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness
  • Blood in vomit or stools
  • Persistent headache or dizziness

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
