Calpol Infant Suspension - Trusted Baby Pain Relief

You can rely on Calpol infant suspension to provide gentle yet effective relief from your baby's pain and fever. This strawberry-flavoured liquid medicine contains paracetamol specifically formulated for infants and young children from 2 months of age. The 100ml bottle comes with a measuring syringe to help you give the correct dose safely.

This infant paracetamol suspension works quickly to reduce fever and ease discomfort from teething, earache, sore throat, headache, and minor aches and pains. You'll find it particularly helpful during those challenging times when your little one is unwell or experiencing growing pains.

How Paracetamol Works in Young Children

Paracetamol reduces fever by acting on the temperature control centre in your child's brain. It also blocks pain signals, providing relief from discomfort without causing drowsiness. The liquid formulation ensures rapid absorption, typically providing relief within 30 minutes of administration.

Unlike some other pain relievers, paracetamol is gentle on your baby's stomach and doesn't cause the digestive upset that can occur with other medicines. This makes it suitable for regular use when managing ongoing conditions like teething pain.

Suitable for Infants and Young Children

This children's fever medicine is specifically designed for babies from 2 months old up to 6 years of age. You can use it safely for various childhood ailments, and many parents keep it as an essential item in their medicine cabinet alongside other baby and toddler healthcare products.

The medicine is particularly suitable for:

  • Reducing fever associated with colds, flu, and other infections
  • Relieving teething pain and discomfort
  • Managing pain from minor injuries or bumps
  • Easing discomfort from earache or sore throat

Sugar-Free Formula for Better Oral Health

You'll appreciate that this baby pain relief medicine is sugar-free, which helps protect your child's developing teeth from decay. The pleasant strawberry flavour makes it easier to administer without the need for added sugars that could contribute to dental problems.

The sugar-free formulation also makes it suitable for children who need to avoid sugar for dietary reasons, whilst still providing the same effective pain and fever relief you expect from this trusted brand.

Storage and Shelf Life Considerations

You should store this medicine below 25°C and keep it out of reach and sight of children. Once opened, the suspension remains effective for the duration of its shelf life when stored correctly. Always check the expiry date before use and never give expired medicine to your child.

The measuring syringe should be washed after each use and stored with the bottle. This helps maintain hygiene and ensures accurate dosing for future administrations.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

Correct Dosage for Different Ages

You must always use the measuring syringe provided to ensure accurate dosing. For infants aged 2-3 months, give 2.5ml up to twice daily, but only on medical advice. Children aged 3-6 months can have 2.5ml up to three times daily, whilst those aged 6-24 months can receive 5ml up to four times daily.

For children aged 2-4 years, you can give 7.5ml up to four times daily, and those aged 4-6 years can have 10ml up to four times daily. Always leave at least 4 hours between doses and never exceed the stated dose or give more than four doses in any 24-hour period.

Administration Instructions

You should shake the bottle well before each use to ensure the medicine is properly mixed. Draw up the correct amount using the measuring syringe and give it directly into your child's mouth, aiming towards the inside of the cheek rather than the back of the throat.

You can give this medicine with or without food, and it's often easier to administer when your child is calm. If your child spits out the medicine immediately, you may repeat the dose once, but if they keep it down for a few minutes before vomiting, do not give another dose until the next scheduled time.

Understanding Possible Side Effects

Like all medicines, Calpol Infant Suspension can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. When used correctly, serious side effects are rare, but you should be aware of what to watch for, especially if your child requires other pain relief medications.

Most children tolerate paracetamol well, but some may experience mild digestive upset or skin reactions. These effects are generally temporary and resolve once the medicine is stopped.

Possible side effects may include:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (very rare)
  • Dark urine (very rare)
  • Pale stools (very rare)
  • Difficulty breathing (very rare)
  • Swelling of face, lips, or tongue (very rare)
  • Blood disorders (extremely rare)
  • Liver problems with prolonged use (very rare)

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
