Bell's Healthcare Children's Allergy Relief 5mg/5ml Oral Solution

This children's allergy relief oral solution provides effective treatment for allergic reactions in children aged 2 years and over. The liquid formulation contains cetirizine hydrochloride, a non-sedating antihistamine that helps control symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, as well as chronic urticaria.

The 100ml bottle delivers measured doses through an included oral syringe, making administration straightforward for parents and carers. Each 5ml contains 5mg of cetirizine hydrochloride, providing 24-hour symptom relief from a single daily dose.

How cetirizine hydrochloride works in allergic reactions

Cetirizine belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines. When your child encounters allergens like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander, their immune system releases histamine, which causes typical allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes.

This medicine works by blocking histamine H1 receptors, preventing histamine from binding and triggering allergic reactions. Unlike older antihistamines, cetirizine is classified as non-sedating, meaning it's less likely to cause drowsiness, though some children may still experience mild sleepiness. You can find more allergy and hay fever treatments in our comprehensive range.

Suitable for children with various allergic conditions

This oral solution is indicated for children aged 2 to 12 years who experience allergic rhinitis or chronic urticaria. The liquid format makes it particularly suitable for younger children who cannot swallow tablets or capsules reliably.

The medicine effectively treats symptoms associated with:

  • Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) caused by pollen
  • Perennial allergic rhinitis triggered by dust mites or pet allergens
  • Chronic idiopathic urticaria (long-term hives of unknown cause)
  • Allergic conjunctivitis symptoms affecting the eyes

Why liquid formulation benefits young patients

The oral solution format offers several practical advantages for paediatric use. Children often struggle with solid dosage forms, and the pleasant-tasting liquid ensures better compliance with treatment regimens. The included oral syringe allows precise dosing based on your child's age and weight.

The solution can be mixed with food or drinks if needed, though this should be done immediately before administration. The liquid formulation also allows for dose adjustments in children with kidney problems, as recommended by healthcare professionals.

Storage requirements and shelf life considerations

Store this medicine below 25°C in the original container to protect from light. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of sight and reach of children. Do not refrigerate or freeze the solution, as this may affect its stability and effectiveness.

Once opened, use within the timeframe specified on the packaging. Check the expiry date before each use and dispose of any remaining medicine safely through your local pharmacy's disposal service.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

Recommended dosage for children by age group

For children aged 2 to 6 years, give 2.5ml once daily, preferably in the evening. Children aged 6 to 12 years should receive 5ml once daily, also preferably taken in the evening. Use the oral syringe provided to measure the correct dose accurately.

The medicine can be taken with or without food. If your child has kidney problems, your doctor may recommend a reduced dose or less frequent dosing. Do not exceed the recommended dose, as this will not improve effectiveness but may increase the risk of side effects.

Administration instructions and timing guidance

Give the dose at the same time each day to maintain consistent symptom control. Evening administration is often preferred as any mild sedating effects will occur during sleep hours. Shake the bottle gently before each use to ensure the medicine is properly mixed.

If you forget to give a dose, give it as soon as you remember, unless it's nearly time for the next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Never give a double dose to make up for a forgotten one. If symptoms persist after several days of treatment, consult your pharmacist or doctor.
