Voltarol Gel for Targeted Pain Relief

You can apply this topical gel directly to areas of pain and inflammation for localised relief. The gel contains diclofenac diethylamine, which belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). When you massage the gel into your skin, it penetrates to the underlying tissues where inflammation and pain occur.

Each gram of gel contains 23.2mg of diclofenac diethylamine. The 100g tube provides sufficient treatment for multiple applications across several weeks, depending on the size of the affected area and frequency of use.

How Diclofenac Gel Works on Inflammation

When you apply the gel, diclofenac works by blocking the production of prostaglandins - chemicals in your body that cause pain, swelling and inflammation. By reducing prostaglandin levels in the affected tissues, the gel helps decrease both pain and swelling at the site of application.

The topical formulation allows the active ingredient to work directly where you need it most, whilst minimising systemic absorption compared to oral pain relief medications. You should notice the effects within a few hours of application, with maximum benefit typically achieved with regular use as directed.

Suitable for Various Musculoskeletal Conditions

This gel is appropriate for treating several types of localised pain and inflammation. You can use it for soft tissue injuries, muscle strains, and joint problems where topical treatment is preferred over oral medication.

  • Sprains and strains affecting muscles, tendons or ligaments
  • Localised forms of soft tissue rheumatism including tendonitis and bursitis
  • Localised forms of degenerative and inflammatory rheumatic conditions
  • Trauma-related inflammation and pain from sports injuries or accidents

The gel format makes it particularly suitable when you need targeted treatment without affecting your entire system. For comprehensive treatment options, you may also consider other products in our pain relief range.

Why Choose Topical Over Oral Treatment

Topical application offers several advantages when treating localised pain and inflammation. You deliver the medication directly to the affected area, which can provide effective relief whilst reducing the risk of systemic side effects that may occur with oral NSAIDs.

The gel formulation absorbs well into your skin and doesn't leave a greasy residue. This makes it convenient for daytime use under clothing or before physical activities. The voltarol gel can be applied up to four times daily, allowing you to maintain consistent pain relief throughout the day.

Storage and Application Guidelines

You should store the gel at room temperature, away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use to prevent the gel from drying out. The gel has a shelf life of 36 months from manufacture when stored correctly.

Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin and massage gently until absorbed. Wash your hands thoroughly after application unless your hands are the area being treated. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and broken or damaged skin. You can find additional topical treatments in our creams and ointments collection.

This product is a medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you have an underlying medical condition or are taking other medicines.

Application Instructions for Optimal Results

You should apply a thin layer of gel to the affected area and gently massage it into your skin until fully absorbed. Clean and dry the treatment area before application to ensure proper absorption. Use only the amount needed to cover the painful area with a thin film. Wash your hands thoroughly after application unless you're treating your hands themselves.

Dosage Frequency and Treatment Duration

You can apply the gel up to four times daily, with applications spaced evenly throughout the day. Allow adequate time between applications for the previous dose to be fully absorbed. You should not exceed the recommended frequency of application. If your symptoms persist beyond seven days of treatment, or if they worsen, consult your pharmacist or doctor for further advice. Avoid covering the treated area with airtight dressings unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional.

Understanding Potential Side Effects

Like all medicines, Voltarol 100g 2.32% gel can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most people tolerate topical diclofenac well, but you should be aware of possible reactions. If you need additional support managing side effects, our creams and ointments collection includes soothing treatments that may help.

The most commonly reported side effects involve skin reactions at the application site. These typically occur in fewer than 1 in 10 people and are usually mild and temporary. Most skin reactions resolve once you stop using the product.

Possible side effects you might experience include:

  • Redness or irritation at the application site
  • Dry skin where the gel was applied
  • Itching or burning sensation on treated skin
  • Skin rash or dermatitis
  • Swelling at the application site
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight in treated areas
  • Blistering or peeling skin (rare)
  • Allergic reactions such as hives
  • Breathing difficulties (very rare but serious)
  • Severe skin reactions requiring immediate medical attention

If you experience these or any other side effects, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting side effects please see the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
