  • Serpina is a herbal (Ayurvedic) medicine produced by Himalaya Wellness Company.

  • Its active ingredient is Rauwolfia serpentina (also called “Sarpagandha”).

  • Rauwolfia / Sarpagandha contains alkaloids (notably Reserpine) that affect the nervous system and cardiovascular system.

What it’s used for — including stress / anxiety / sleep / cardiovascular support

According to product descriptions and some older clinical/clinical-style literature, Serpina (via Rauwolfia) has been used for:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure) — Relaxing blood vessels, reducing peripheral resistance and cardiac output.

  • Anxiety, stress, nervous tension — Lowering “adrenergic tone,” which may help calm the nervous system and relieve stress or anxiety.

  • Sedation and sleep support — Because of its calming effects and effect on central nervous system, some people reportedly experience better relaxation and sleep.

  • General cardiovascular support — Through its blood-pressure-lowering and circulation effects.

Some sources state Serpina may be particularly useful when “stress and nervous tension” contribute to raised blood pressure.

What scientific / clinical evidence says

  • There is an early clinical trial from 1949 on patients with essential hypertension taking commercially-available Rauwolfia (Serpina) showing that after 4 weeks, ~85% of the hypertensive patients had a drop of ~21 mmHg in systolic blood pressure and ~11 mmHg in diastolic BP.

  • Historical long-term use in older hypertensive patients showed “mild hypotensive effect” and a noticeable “tranquilizing” (calming) effect, with side-effects considered “relatively minor, transient and rarely necessitating stopping the drug.”

  • More recent (preclinical) work on Rauwolfia serpentina suggests it may modulate physiological stress-response systems (e.g. in animals, reducing stress-induced biochemical and behavioural changes).

Important caveat: many of these studies date back decades; modern rigorous clinical trials — especially for “stress relief / anxiety / sleep support” — are limited or not well-documented. Herbal/traditional labels often mix clinical, anecdotal, and historical evidence — which may not meet modern standards of proof.

 Risks, Side-Effects, and Warnings

Because of how Rauwolfia/Reserpine works (on blood pressure and central nervous system), there are some safety concerns:

  • Possible side-effects include drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, nasal congestion.

  • Because it lowers blood pressure, there is a risk of hypotension (especially if taken with other antihypertensive drugs or by people already with low BP).

  • Long-term use or high doses have been associated with more serious risks: in some traditional/clinical-review sources, concerns about depression, mood changes, CNS depression, and even potential effects on fertility or organ systems are mentioned.

  • It’s typically contraindicated (or advised with caution) for people with certain conditions: existing depression or psychiatric history; ulcers or stomach problems; kidney disease; pregnancy/breastfeeding; or those on certain drugs (especially other antihypertensives, sedatives, some psychiatric medications).

  • What that means if you consider using Serpina for stress

  • Serpina may help with stress-related symptoms (e.g. nervous tension, mild anxiety, sleep issues) — particularly when stress coincides with raised blood pressure or nervous-system overstimulation.

  • It may be more useful as a supportive / complementary aid — not as a guaranteed “cure” for stress or anxiety.

  • Because of its effects on blood pressure and brain chemistry, medical supervision is very important — especially if you have other health conditions or take other medications (blood-pressure medicine, psychiatric drugs, etc.).

  • Use cautiously, monitor how you feel (blood pressure, mood, sleep, side-effects) and avoid long-term self-medication without periodic assessment.
